Wines for weekday suppers
Recommended by Rachel Nuttall
I love white Burgundy, and recently I have been drinking Vincent Dampt's 2006 Chablis in half bottles at £5.39 and Maison Auvigue's 2006 Macon-Solutré at £8.49. Vincent Dampt is an up-and-coming star from a long line of Chablis winemakers and has travelled extensively in the southern hermisphere to hone his techniques, while Maison Auvigue have been in business since the forties, sourcing grapes from other estates and producing from their own vineyards. The Auvigue estate is now owned by the third generation of the family.
Both wines are worth a second look for their freshness, purity, minerality, balance and soft, round fruit - they are shining examples of unoaked Chardonnay from a good white Burgundy vintage.
When I have drunk red recently with a good roast on a Sunday evening, I have really enjoyed Gonnet's 2004 Côtes du Rhone at £6.99. The blend is 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Cinsault. The vineyards are owned by the Gonnet family who are also the owners of the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape property Domaine Font de Michelle. It is fresh and light with ripe, red berry fruit, balanced and refined in style - perfect again for week-day suppers.
My recommedations are good, honest wines, punching above their weight, from the Corney & Barrow exclusive porfolio. They are not to be missed, so try them now. Enjoy!
