South Australia produces almost half of Australia’s wine. Its geography varies enormously, creating a diverse range of sites and microclimates which yield a myriad of grapes and wine styles.While the hot, irrigated Riverland region produces grapes for Australia’s bag-in-box wines, South Australia harbours cooler sites in the hills behind Adelaide and closer to the ocean. These have potential for finer wines, such as Penfold’s legendary Grange, arguably Australia’s most famous wine. Clare and Eden Valley Riesling, Barossa Valley Shiraz (Mad Dog is a knockout) and Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon (Australia’s left-bank Bordeaux) are classics.
