Chile’s Valle Central is the focus of Chile’s wine production, its largest and oldest wine region. Stretching over 400 miles south from the capital Santiago, the Valle Central wine region lies in a depression between the Andes and the coastal mountains, criss-crossed by rivers flowing west from the Andes to the Pacific. The Valle Central is divided into four sub-regions: Maipo, Rapel (itself comprising the prized vineyard areas of Colchagua and Cachapoal), Curicó and Maule. There is a vast range in climate and geography between these different regions giving an impressive array of wine styles based largely on traditional French red grape varieties. From the elegant Bordeaux-style Cabernets of the Maipo to Rapel’s full-bodied, spicy Syrahs and Carmenères, the Valle Central is home to many of Chile’s most acclaimed wineries, offering benchmark wines for every palate and pocket.
