The Central Vineyards seems an uninspired name for a wine region behind some of France’s most inspiring wines! At the far east of the Loire Valley wine region, the Central Vineyards produce mainly white wines whose style is based on five main factors: grape variety, soils, climate, topography and producer. Sauvignon Blanc rules here, playing its role to perfection in the famous white wines of Sancerreand Pouilly-Fumé, while Menetou-Salon, Reuilly and Quincy also offer stylish drinking. The depth of flavour of these wines is due partly to the continental climate, while their elegance and minerally acidities are linked to soils rich in chalky clay and flint. The top wines are often from hillside vineyards slanted to catch the sun, however as always, the grower is fundamental to quality. The Central Vineyards also yield tiny quantities of delicate, fruity Pinot Noir rosé and red wines.
