While there are many delicious wines available for considerably less than £10 a bottle, paying a few pounds more will net you massive incremental gains in terms of quality and value for money. There are clear-cut reasons for this: freight, duty rates and packaging are pretty much identical for every bottle, irrespective of retail price. So the cheaper your bottle, the more you are paying – proportionately – to the Chancellor and for transport, leaving precious little for the wine itself. A bottle costing between £10 and £20, however, offers commensurately more wine for your cash. Superior quality grapes, prime vineyards, extra TLC in the winemaking process… all factors that give wine character, concentration, complexity and class. £10-20 may not be within budget for your weekday supper wine, but makes a perfect Friday night treat or dinner party wine.
