Domaine de L'Aurage 2007

France  >  Bordeaux  >  Côtes de Castillon

A well-balanced, expressive Côtes de Castillon. A Merlot based wine from an undervalued region bordering St Emillion.

Plum-ruby in colour, Louis, in true Mitjavile style, does not make a second wine so this is a true expression of the vintage, as translated by this property. The nose and palate present layered fruit, punctuated by dark chocolate notes and mocha cream, headily spiced. Although very accessible now, this clearly has the capacity to age

Merlot blend, 2007, Dry, Full bodied, 13.5%, Cork

This wine exudes quality. The nose contains hints of blackcurrants, herbs, and traces of menthol. The mouth feel is wonderfully smooth, but there are traces of spice on the dry finish. There is enough tannin to balance the fruit, and allow the wine to keep for some time. Overall beautifully balanced, well made wine. Class in a glass!

Fantastic! This was a top tip from Adam Brett-Smith and it didn't disappoint. We had it as our Christmas Day wine last year and it blew everyone away.

Spellbinding. So much depth, complexity and finish that is rarely available at this price, hence I give it 5 stars. A great find. Well done C&B.

Very good Claret. Deep, dark appearance - still showing its youth. On the nose: coffee, caramel, herbs & sweet spices - notably mint, pepper & cinnamon. On tasting it has firm tannins - sharpish on tongue, but smooth nontheless, chewy & long. Overall very enjoyable and will doubtless get better; will be very good with well hung beef. Recommended

Wine with lot of potential but can be drunk now and be very accessible but also would be good to keep and drink later. Lots of layers of flavours : dark chocolate, spices, minerality.

Press Reviews

"Another excellent C&B wine, which I recommend in case anyone wants to order half a dozen of each for Christmas (deadline is December 17). The Cotes de Castillon is a good hunting ground for well-priced, merlot-based bordeaux and this is no exception."

Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph (December 2010)

"Classy, well-crafted, modernist claret from a relatively new estate in the Cotes de Castillon appellation next to St-Emilion. With merlot dominant in the blend, it combines a glossy texture and fine tannins with some very generous ripe fruit."

David Williams, The Observer (November 2010)

Score 90/100. "From the property formerly known as Chteau Cadet until purchased by Louis Mitjavile, this has a sweet fruit mintiness with cedar and woodsmoke coming through, and real brightness and raciness to the wine. The palate too has lovely poise and balance, crying out for a chunk of crumbly cheddar or slice of rare roast beef."

The Wine Gang (October 2010)

"Lovely sweet fruit mintiness. Cedar and woodsmoke come through, with a brightness and raciness to the wine. The palate too has lovely poise and balance, the dry, savoury quality crying out for a chunk of crunly cheddar or slice of rare roast beef. 90/100"

Tom Cannavan, www.wine-pages.com (2010)
