HdV Belle Cousine Hyde de Villaine 2006
Hyde de Villaine was established through the meeting of two historic wine families. Aubert & Pamela de Villaine from Burgundy and Larry Hyde from the Napa Valley. This wine was named in honour of Pamela de Villaine, Larry Hyde¿s cousin. It takes advantage of the cooler Carneros climate wherein Merlot thrives, blended with Cabernet Sauvignon.
Intense jet-ruby, with a tight rim, this is rather assertive on the nose - a certain savoury character complemented by earthy minerals, hints of dark chocolate and pepper. The palate reveals dark fruit, underpinned by chewy, fine-grained tannins. Good weight and balanced, shine through obvious muscle and innate power - impressive
Merlot blend, 2006, Dry, Full bodied, 14.5%, Cork
Will Lyons, Wall Street Journal (October 2010)
"Cabernet Sauvignon quite evident in the blackcurrant and mint on the nose, rather than mixed fruit, perhaps picked just short of full ripeness, dense fruit, high acidity, moderately tannic, not blowsy or easy, this is undoubtedly a wine for ageing.
In this vintage the mix is 88% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, both planted in 1986 The Cabernet was planted on the higher slope with an E-W orientation which is not ideal, but they can work on the wine in the winery. They pick the two sides of the vines separately and vinify them in different lots and so can blend according to the results. "
