Corney & Barrow St Emilion Ets J-P Moueix 2005

France > Bordeaux > St-Emilion

An appealing, well-balanced wine with elevated, perfumed notes - a fine example of this popular appellation.

St-Emilion has vineyards as far as the eye can see, dotted with ancient ruins, both military and ecclesiastical. The terroir here has long been recognised for its affinity with the Merlot grape, St-Emilion's dominant variety. The 2005 displays a luscious brambled character with hints of spice, tobacco and clean minerality.

Merlot blend, 2005, Dry, Medium bodied, 13%, Cork

Whilst increasingly a convert to red Burgundy, this reminded me how a good red Bordeaux, at a very reasonable price, should taste. Strong and hearty without being over-powering and in classic St Emilion style. We had it for a simple weekday supper and was the standout favourite amongst those around the table. Every cellar should have a few cases of this wine.

I’d taken a break from drinking French wines for a number of years, in favour of Riojas, Barolos and new world reds. However, after a tip off from a friend, I decided to try C&B’s House Bordeaux St Emilion. I’m somewhat hesitant to try ‘house wines’ due to my preconceptions about quality – but I found this St Emilion to be a pleasant surprise. Fleshy and rich, dark berries, red fruits and spice, combined with rounded and smooth tannins made this wine very drinkable. It perfectly complemented a meal of venison sausages and red cabbage. It was also great on its own long after we’d finished the meal. I’ll definitely order this again.
