In 1989 Cockburns bought Quinta dos Canais - a vineyard staring across at Quinta de Vargellas. Huge investment was made in re-planting the property which clearly paid off with Cockburn's asserting 2003 to be the best vintage they had ever made - beautifully balanced with spiced dark fruit and elegant tannins.
