Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, 2008 Vintage En Primeur

2008 Vintage Release

There is a purity and transparency about these 2008s in particular for their ability to offer a terroir-driven loyalty and clarity in and of each specific vineyard. In this there is a passing resemblance to 2007, another vintage that plucked victory from defeat, but 2008 offers more perhaps, not just a sweetness and seductive freshness of texture but also, like a child born of older parents, a quality of profundity, seriousness and a sort of wisdom that makes this quite extraordinarily compelling vintage.

“Truth is everything. You cannot cheat in this vintage and if I had to choose a year to compare with 2008 then I would choose 2001. They’re not the same but it is in the same style. I love 2008.”
François Millet, Maître de Chai, 19th November 2009.

Weingut Joh. Jos Prüm, Germany, En Primeur

2008 Vintage Release

These wines are challenging in that they are wonderfully tempting in youth yet they fully deserve many years of temperate evolution; there are nuances here which take time to reveal their charms. With age, these wines become multi-layered and complex, ever-youthful yet sophisticated, presenting nobility, breeding and elegance.Corney & Barrow were extremely lucky to be offered our first allocation of J.J. Prüm wines in 2009, the result of a chance encounter between sales director Oliver Hartley and Katharina Prüm in Singapore, the previous year. The reputation of this fine estate had preceded it yet the Corney & Barrow team were nonetheless bowled over by the initial tasting. Every wine is so very true unto its origin, unique and wonderfully pure.

“The 2008 wines are very refreshing, juicy, appealing wines with expressive aromas and flavours, a racy, vibrant acidity and a fine minerality.”
Katharina Prüm, January 2010

Burgundy Release, En Primeur, 2008 Vintage

2008 Vintage Release

The preview of our 2008 Burgundy vintage release last night has given us a spring in our step. The reaction was extremely positive; whites with lovely, ripe fruit backed up by pure, intense minerality and reds with classy, pure fruit and promising concentration and sweetness. It is important to note that the wines in this collection have been assessed critically and, having made the cut, naturally come highly recommended. It is often commented that we wax lyrical about all of the wines we are offering – in which case we are guilty as charged. These wines have been selected because we are so enthusiastic about them. We are both extremely proud to give them our endorsement and hopeful that we will introduce customers to something new and exciting.

“The 2008 Vintage has produced very elegant vivacious and fluid wines, a wonderful surprise that no-one could foresee up until two weeks before the vendanges. It has been a spectacular recovery after dismal climatic conditions throughout the summer made us fear the worst.”
Guillaume d’Angerville, January 2010

Domaine Leflaive, Burgundy, France

2008 Vintage Release

On Sunday, 14th September, a keen north wind blew away the vagaries of an erratic growing season, calmed the restive vines and took this Domaine into a vintage that neatly finesses both the powerful 2006s and silky 2007s. These 2008s are lovely wines.

“The 2008 vintage offers seductive, voluptuous wines, tempered by purity and freshness”
Anne-Claude Leflaive, 2009

Tardieu-Laurent, Rhône, France

2008 Vintage Release

The hallmark of 2008 is that these are vins de garde – wines which will best reward the patient. They are well-balanced and intensely coloured with impressive tannins which will need time to become integrated. The whites are stunning, electric, vibrant and intense.

“2008 is a vintage where work in the vineyards – specifically with the soil and the vines – played an essential part.”
Michel Tardieu

Domaine Bonneau du Martray, Burgundy, France

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2008
and Corton Grand Cru 2008

31.93 hectolitres/hectare. Or put more simply, it took the product of almost three vines to make just one bottle of Corton-Charlemagne 2008. The wine is extraordinary within or without the context of the vintage, and even at this embryonic stage, repays profoundly the very great investments in the vineyard that the Domaine has undertaken these last ten years. Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière is the driving force behind this.

“It is for its white wine, one of the greatest in all of Burgundy that this Domaine gains three stars.” Clive Coates MW, The Wines of Burgundy, 2008 University of California Press
