It is currently overseen by Sofia Thanisch, representing the 11th generation and the fourth woman to manage the estate. The name of the vineyard, Bernkasteler Badstube,is indeed named after historic communal bathhouses-public bathing being imported as an idea by returning crusaders. The soil here, fine slate, makes for wines with racy acidity and great potential.
