Domaine des Hauts Châssis makes a supple and smooth Syrah from stony terraces in the Northern Rhône whilst Joostenberg’s Klippe Kou, our newest South African find, has a savoury and smoky edge to its brambly black fruit.

Dining tables represent a veritable smörgåsbord throughout the Christmas period – brimming with platters that are laden with trimmings. To cope with the variety of food, you need wines that are agile, versatile and nimble on their feet…

Bright and zippy wines are the ideal foil to smoked salmon’s oily richness – try ‘Moulin de la Justice’ Muscadet Sèvre et Maine from Domaine Julien Braud  for Loire Valley freshness, or the vivid fruit flavours of Thanisch Riesling Kabinett. For roast turkey, Chardonnay’s creamy fruit and racy acidity make a superb match – select the ripe peach and pastry flavours of Domaine de la Jobeline’s Mâcon-Villages; the elegant and expressive Elephant Hill Chardonnay  with its toasty kiss of oak; or the bold fruit and flicker of sweet spice of Cakebread Chardonnay  from Napa Valley.

The equivalent of two bottles, magnums make a festive statement and will let your guests know that they are in for a good time. Making for an impressive Christmas dining table centrepiece, these bottles are the ideal size for sharing.

If you’re hosting this year, kick off proceedings with the perfect aperitivo – Pianer Prosecco, meticulously crafted by sparkling wine experts Le Colture. Perfect with a roast, Barrail du Blanc Grand Cru St-Émilion is a longstanding C&B favourite packed with plush, plummy fruit draped in velvety tannins.

Or impress your guests with Ridolfi’s layered and complex Brunello di Montalcino. Alternatively, consider a magnum as a tremendous gift for any wine lover. Due to their larger size, magnums are widely regarded as an excellent format for maturing wine – the amount of oxygen in the neck is roughly equivalent to the amount found in a standard-sized bottle, but there is twice the liquid, meaning the wine in a magnum ages more slowly and gracefully.

Often an afterthought, sweet wines are just too good to play a supporting role on the big day. These delicious drinks display a masterclass of balance, combining luscious sweetness with mouthwatering acidity.

Made using a variety of methods and demonstrating a range of styles, these wines are a testament to the art of viticulture and winemaking. Packing a riot of aromas, flavours and textures into a bottle, sweet wines are a marvellous match for Christmas cake and pudding, chocolatey desserts or a fabulous companion to cheese.

Our Corney & Barrow Sauternes and Joostenberg Estate’s Noble Late Harvest Chenin Blanc  are made using grapes affected by ‘Botrytis’ – a fungus that can be so devastating in nature, harnessed here to produce something magnificent. Think flavours of candied orange, crème brûlée and ginger. Whereas the beguiling nutty caramel and spiced notes of Corney & Barrow’s 20-year-old Tawny Port  is achieved through fortifying a base.
