You’re trying to pair wine and pancakes… are you mad, we hear you cry?
It may not be one of our more traditional food pairing suggestions, but with a varied selection of toppings, fillings and general yumminess, wine and pancakes are a great combination. Below are some of the team’s favourites for Pancake Day, each matched with a delicious tipple (not all recommended for breakfasting…)
Pancakes with sugar & lemon
If you like your traditional sugar and lemon pancakes, try a lightly sweet wine such as a delicately tangy Muscat. The tangy, tropical flavours with delicate floral notes in this Vin Doux Naturel with compliment the citrus sweetness perfectly.
Pancakes & chocolate
Always a difficult pairing – wine and chocolate – but assuming your chocolate has melted or you have chosen a chocolate sauce, a nice big Port is ideal. Try our new Own Label 20 year old Tawny, with hints of orange, nuts and spice.
Fresh berries with pancakes
A delicious dessert suggestion (or maybe breakfast, if you’re lucky enough to have the day off). Pair with a sparkling rose, like this favourite from Le Colture, ideal with its own ripe red berry flavours and delicate mousse.
Maple/Golden syrup pancakes
Who doesn’t love indulging in a bit of sugary sweetness? And if we’re going all out, this unctuous style of pancake deserves an equally decadent wine. We’re a fan of this luxurious and velvety Tokaji, beautifully balanced, with citrus fruit and fine acidity.
Seriously savoury pancakes
Aha, a pancake day treat that we can legitimately get away with calling dinner! Easier to pair with wine than sweet ones, savoury pancakes – think cheese, ham, mushroom, whatever you fancy! – go well with a nice dry wine to cut through, such as Sancerre or a big oaky Chardonnay. Try this Hawkes Bay treat from Elephant Hill.
Hm… on second thoughts, maybe pancake day should be everyday…
Have a great Shrove Tuesday everyone!
