16.5

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Carmenere. Bitter cherries on the nose, with a hint of brine. The palate is crunchy and precise, red fruited with some tomato leaf detailing. Fine tannins guide the fruit nicely, exerting a gentle grip on the finish.

Pessac-Leognan

Domaine de Chevalier Blanc 2017

£825.00

Case of 12

17.5

The 2017 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc displays a gently grassy nose, leading into a palate of bright white peach and zesty green melon. Somewhat less exuberant than in some years, this is beautifully measured and precise, with just-so texture, viscosity and a nice saline twist.

Château Picque Caillou 2017

Case of 12

17

Made by our good friend Paulin Calvet, the 2017 Picque Caillou displays a truly lovely nose of ripe blackcurrant and raspberry, perfumed and with a sweet edge which is rare this vintage. The palate is softly-fruited on the entry, with excellent density of fruit and supple, fruit-coated tannins. Fresh acidity balances beautifully. An overachiever.

Pessac-Leognan

Domaine de Chevalier

£515.00

Case of 12

17

A highly saturated purple-ruby colour, heralding a cedary, sweetly-spiced nose, with graphite and dark cherries beneath. The palate has grippy tannins on the entry, receding to reveal a mid-palate of ripe blackberry fruit, with excellent definition. A success of the vintage. This is being aged in 35% new oak for 18 months.

Pomerol

Château Rouget

£375.00

Case of 12

17

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Deep inky-purple colour. Profound, ripe black cherry on the nose, with bright red-fruited high-notes. The palate is lifted, with excellent depth and a lick of sweetness. Wonderfully aromatically detailed, with firm cedar and a creamy lactic density to the mid-palate. Buoyant balancing acidity, with fine tannic definition on the finish.

This was picked from 20th to 29th September and is being aged in 30% new oak barrels.

Château Picque Caillou Blanc 2017

£95.00

Case of 6

16.5

Made by our good friend Paulin Calvet, the 2017 Picque Caillou Blanc has a nose of lovely gentle grassiness and wet-stone minerality, with enough palate weight to give it real substance. An early drinker brimming with personality.

St-Julien

Château Talbot 2017

£455.00

Case of 12

16.5

The 2017 Talbot has a darkly fruited, measured nose. The palate shows dark berries, brine and dark rocky minerality on the attack, broadening a little on the mid-palate to reveal forceful tannins. A harmonious wine, with good energy and persistence. It is being aged in 50% new oak.

St-Julien

Château Beychevelle 2017

£650.00

Case of 12

17

Brilliant purple hue. High-toned and zesty on the nose, with grapefruit notes, as seems to be the style of recent vintages of Beychevelle. The palate is mid-weight, lively and buoyed on a cushion of acidity. Good support from fine, detailed tannins.

Margaux

Château Malescot St. Exupéry 2017

£430.00

Case of 12

16

An inviting nose of dark cherry and raspberry aromatics. The mid-weight palate is softly-fruited and with an intriguing sweet-and-savoury counterpoint. Firm, characterful tannins channel the fruit. Not a blockbuster style, but there is personality and verve here.

Cotes de Castillon

Château Montlandrie 2017

£90.00

Case of 6

16

From the Denis Durantou (Eglise Clinet) stable, this has supple red berries, balancing against forceful, broad-boned tannins. Good drive, with forceful extract.

St-Emilion

Saintayme 2017

£135.00

No

16.5

From the Denis Durantou (Eglise Clinet) stable, Saintayme is 100% Merlot. Bright, sweet, red-berried fruit. Considering the price, this is a no-brainer – buy it and drink it young! Picked 29thSeptember to 9th October.

Pomerol

Château Les Cruzelles 2017

£105.00

Case of 6

16.5

From the Denis Durantou (Eglise Clinet) stable, Les Cruzelles has concentrated blackcurrant and forest fruits, with grippy fruit-coated tannins, which have ample fruit to balance them out. A wine of great honesty which will drink early but should also age well.

Pomerol

Château Gazin 2017

£705.00

Case of 12

17

90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc. Lovely Parma violets on the nose and ripe raspberries. The palate sees darker fruits on the attack, as is usual at Gazin, with bitter chocolate and assertive, fruit-coated tannins. There is wonderful fruit sweetness here, contrary to the trend in 2017. Upbeat.
