St-Estephe

Château Meyney 2017

£225.00

Case of 12

16

53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 11% Petit Verdot. Deep purple in colour, with sweet spices and cedar on the nose. The palate is creamy and dark fruited, with firm tannins. Good traditional St Estèphe, which will need a little cellar time to soften. 40% new oak barrels.

Pauillac

Château Croizet-Bages 2017

£310.00

Case of 12

16

The 2017 Croizet-Bages has pure, crunchy red berries on the nose. The palate is bright and juicy, with brisk acidity lifting the raspberry fruit, before tannic grip exerts itself on the finish. Once the tannins resolve, this will be a good early drinker.

Medoc

Château Chasse-Spleen 2017

£260.00

16.5

A nose dark berries, with some bitter cherry and a hint of brine. The palate is wonderfully upbeat on the entry, with excellent vivacity. Red and black berries, medium-bodied, with granular grippy tannins. A pick, which will likely prove good value.

Haut-Medoc

Château Cantemerle 2017

£245.00

Case of 12

16.5

Dark berries and attractive savoury spice detailing on the nose. The palate shows ripe blackcurrant and is firmly built, with bountiful tannic extract exerting a squeeze on the fruit. Although denser in style than the 2016, this should turn out very well.

Pomerol

La Chenade, Lalande de Pomerol 2017

£75.00

Case of 6

0

From the Denis Durantou (Eglise Clinet) stable. We did not taste La Chenade this year, but it is a perennial source of good value drinking and as the fourth wine in this collection of right bank drinkers, it deserves highlighting.

St-Estephe

Château Ormes de Pez 2017

£230.00

Haut-Medoc

Château de Lamarque 2017

£149.00

Case of 12

17

Very pretty initially on the nose, floral and berried, it soon gives way to darker spice and earthy notes then, on the palate a role reversal as flowers once again come to the fore, albeit supported by a quite serious. dark structure, earthy minerals, coffee and chocolate notes – a very commendable ambassador for the appellation and vintage.

Haut-Medoc

Château Sociando-Mallet 2017

£265.00

Case of 12

16.5

Pure red berries on the nose, tinged with violets – open, playful and lifted. The medium-weight palate is upbeat, light on its feet and with pleasingly supple tannins. An early-drinking style and nothing wrong with that – joyfully approachable.

St-Julien

Château Langoa Barton 2017

£390.00

Case of 12

17

Highly pigmented, glass-staining ruby. A gratifyingly red-fruited nose, perfumed and inviting. The palate has lovely fruit-coated tannins, which are forceful to be sure, but balance nicely with the darker-fruited mid-palate flavours. Lives up to expectations.

Graves

Château Pape Clément Rouge 2017

£380.00

Case of 6

17

Bright, firm red berries on the nose, with a touch of cedar. The palate is pure and immediate, a nice meeting of crunchiness and weighty red berries. This seems purer and more hands-off than in some previous years, a good thing.

Graves

Château Pape Clément Blanc 2017

£600.00

Case of 6

17

Firmly stone-fruited, with abundant volume and viscosity, bright green citrus meeting grassiness and bright white pears. Excellent energy, driving through to a long finish. A success of the vintage, recommended.

Haut-Medoc

Château La Lagune 2017

£380.00

Case of 12

16

An attractive nose of dark fruits and savoury spice leads into a pure, immediate black-fruited palate with a touch of pepper. Hangs together well, with good focus. Plantings: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot.

Pessac-Leognan

Château Latour-Martillac

£275.00

Case of 12

0

Gently grassy nose, with a touch of lifted tropical ebullience. The palate is more extrovert and overt.

Medoc

Château Potensac

£205.00

CASE12

16.5

Red fruited and slightly built, with good purity, perfume and crunchiness. A direct style, perfectly well balanced. Sneaks up on you stealthily and ends up impressing, with perfume persisting on the finish.

St-Julien

Château Branaire-Ducru

£410.00

CASE12

17

The 2017 Branaire-Ducru has a darkly-berried, bitter cherry nose, with a little savoury spice. The palate is similarly dark-fruited, with a fabulous sense of energy and excellent persistence. Finely extracted tannins. Tasted twice, the second time with an extra level of flair. Really good wine, cut from classical cloth but with a glimpse of the X-factor.

60% new oak, cropped at 40 hl/ha. Plantings: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.
