Château Cheval Blanc 2018 - ON ALLOCATION

£3,290.00

CASE6

18.5

14/06/2019

54% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark and brooding on the nose, with time in the glass revealing red cherry perfume. The palate opens to reveal deep blackcurrant and raspberry fruit, with a driving verve and energy. The tannins are wonderfully polished and perfume-infused, without detracting from their stark, raw power. For the patient! This comes from 33 plots. 125,000 bottles have been made, representing around three quarters of production, the biggest quantity since 1993. Good yields – 43hl/ha. Picked 10th September to 11th October.

Picked 17th September to 12th October. Apparently the Cabernet Franc here was especially successful this year. The grand vin represents 65% of production.

Prettily perfumed on the nose, with sweetly red berried fruit, cherry tomatoes and polished tannins. All very polite, ideally I’d like to see a little more grunt but it’s hard to fault. 14.3% abv.

53% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc. A powerful redcurrant nose, with flinty black pepper spice. Fine violet and rose petal perfume emerges with a little time in the glass. The palate chimes with energy, a rush of electric nervy tension on the attack, remaining fine and taut through the mid-palate, to a long, precise and powerful finish, on which a coating of sweet raspberry fruit persists in the mouth. Very fine tannins are beautifully integrated. Picked 10th September to 2nd October.

CASE6

17.5

04/06/2019

Pagodes de Cos Blanc 2018

£200.00

CASE6

16.5

04/06/2019

£890.00

CASE6

18

04/06/2019

74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc,1% Petit Verdot. Reticent dark berries on the nose, leading into a palate of rigorous, chiselled tannins, which are pleasantly fruit-coated, with just enough pliancy of fruit. Finishes salty and clipped. An intense, powerful, shapely Cos – taut rather than curvaceous, but harnessing well the stark beauty of St Estephe. Cropped at 30hl/ha this year, lower than usual due to mildew. Two thirds of production went into the grand vin.

Pauillac

Château Lynch-Bages 2018

£530.00

CASE6

18

29/05/2019

72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot. A massive, virile sense of power and swagger on the nose here, with blackcurrant and rocky, earthy minerality. The palate has an initial sense of sweet dark fruit, before the currently ferocious tannins kick in on the mid-palate, taking over entirely at this early stage. Fresh acidity lends a sense of accessibility-to-come on the finish. This will find its balance, but will be a very long-lived wine – for the patient. The overall production was 30% down. 14% abv.

Pauillac

Bourg

Roc de Cambes 2018

£260.00

CASE6

18

14/05/2019

Similar to Tertre Roteboeuf, this has 80% Merlot, but the remaining 20% is Cabernet Sauvignon rather than Franc. The nose has dark cherry fruit, kirsch and a playful strawberried lift. The palate has a crisply acidic core, lending a freshness and clipped momentum. The supple tannins are coated with dense, sweet raspberry fruit, with fresh mint and cedary spice adding complexity. This speaks softly but carries a big stick – beguilingly accessible, yet with a bass rumble of power. 100% new oak, which is all but imperceptible. Sadly, over half the crop was lost to hailstorms which struck Bourg in May and July.

Exclusive

Fresh acidity balances harmoniously, giving a sense of poise to the long finish. 100% new oak.

The palate is supple and inviting, with plush blackberry and blueberry fruit… until the powerful tannins assert themselves, at which point you sit up and pay attention, realising you are in the presence of something special.  An explosive yet shapely wine, with insistent drive. There are no harsh edges here: “a monster, but a beautiful one”, in Adam Brett-Smith’s words. 100% new oak.
