22/05/2019

66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. Darkly, sweetly berried and leafy, with a high level of broad, grippy tannin. Dense and impressive, a good sign of the new direction under Jean-Michel Laporte. Exclusive

Bourg

Roc de Cambes 2018

£260.00

CASE6

18

14/05/2019

Similar to Tertre Roteboeuf, this has 80% Merlot, but the remaining 20% is Cabernet Sauvignon rather than Franc. The nose has dark cherry fruit, kirsch and a playful strawberried lift. The palate has a crisply acidic core, lending a freshness and clipped momentum. The supple tannins are coated with dense, sweet raspberry fruit, with fresh mint and cedary spice adding complexity. This speaks softly but carries a big stick – beguilingly accessible, yet with a bass rumble of power. 100% new oak, which is all but imperceptible. Sadly, over half the crop was lost to hailstorms which struck Bourg in May and July.

Exclusive

Cotes de Castillon

L'Aurage 2018

£285.00

CASE12

17.5

14/05/2019

L’Aurage is a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, mirroring the vineyard plantings. A dark, smoky nose with liquorice and kirsch, then weighty bitter cherry, blackcurrant and forest fruits on the palate. The tannins are sturdy and rather decadently fruit-coated, with a sweet silkiness of texture that makes this dangerously easy to drink. Spicy and potent, a compelling wine. Fresh acidity balances harmoniously, giving a sense of poise to the long finish. 100% new oak.

Exclusive

St-Emilion

Tertre Roteboeuf 2018

£790.00

CASE6

18.5

14/05/2019

This is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, reflecting the vineyard plantings. An alluring, delicately aromatic nose of violets, peonies and rose petals. The palate is supple and inviting, with plush blackberry and blueberry fruit… until the powerful tannins assert themselves, at which point you sit up and pay attention, realising you are in the presence of something special.  An explosive yet shapely wine, with insistent drive. There are no harsh edges here: “a monster, but a beautiful one”, in Adam Brett-Smith’s words. 100% new oak.

St-Julien

Château Gloria 2018

£345.00

CASE12

16

10/05/2019

A polite style, dark fruited and with good intensity and fine, grippy tannins. Verging on safe, but time will tell. Plantings: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot.

St-Estephe

Château Lafon-Rochet 2018

£385.00

CASE12

17.5

10/05/2019

64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot. Dark berries and liquorice, with a fine line of violet perfume rising from the glass. The tannins are rigorous and powerful, as befits Saint Estephe’s Atlantic air and heavy clay soils. Finishes precise. This is a pick. 14.5% abv. 40% new oak.

Pauillac

Château Duhart-Milon 2018

£340.00

CASE6

17.5

10/05/2019

65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot. A powerful and glycerol-slick Duhart, with dark cherry fruit and a hint of brine, gravelly minerality and dark spices lingering on the finish. 14% abv. Picked slightly later than usual this year, contributing to this fuller, more extrovert style. Impressive.

Pauillac

Château Clerc Milon 2018

£365.00

CASE6

17

10/05/2019

From the Mouton Rothschild stable. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc. Blackcurrant and bitter cherry, with a deft lick of new oak gloss. The tannins are supple and polished. Ferrous minerality and grip on the back-palate.

Margaux

Château Palmer 2018 - SOLD OUT

£1,445.00

CASE6

18

10/05/2019

53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot. Very attractive raspberry perfume and rose petals on the nose. Cushioned, ripe red berries on the palate, with cool, precise blackcurrant fruit persisting on the finish. The tannins are firm but luxuriously fruit-coated, wonderfully rounded and lending a sweet touch to the long finish.

The yield was just 11 hl/ha in 2018, historically low, due to the rainy weather, and resulting mildew in the closed bunches. By consequence, there is a high level of concentration. Picked 13th September to 15th October. Just 6,000 cases will be produced, compared to the usual 10-12,000. The second wine, Alter Ego de Palmer, was not made in 2018.

Pessac-Leognan

Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2018 - SOLD OUT

37% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot. Lifted blackcurrant and red cherry, dense and raisined on the nose. Juicy raspberry and black cherry fruit on the palate is framed by powerful fine tannins and a charge of irony minerality. Lots of personality here, finishing clipped and saline, with fresh acidity. 52% whole bunch vinification, which makes for an atypical style (in a good way).
