Château Plince 2019

Case of 12

12/06/2020

Since 2015, a beautiful 4 hectare (9.9 acres) plot of La Fleur-Pétrus has been incorporated into this historic property which remains very small at just 9 hectares. Here the soil is gravel on clay which, with its 100% Merlot content, gives the wine a fabulous, sexy density, no more so than in 2019.

Opaque, almost black ruby colour. The nose is fat – if one can say that – with super plump creamy black and red fruits, that sexy density, with rich but fresh extraction and delectable length. Super wine and an absolute snip.

Pomerol

Château Latour à Pomerol 2019

£370.00

Case of 6

18

12/06/2020

Latour is one of the hidden legends of Pomerol, acquired by Madame Loubat (who also owned Petrus) in 1917 and made by Ets. J.P. Moueix since 1962. It is tiny, just 8 hectares (19.5 acres), with both clay and deep gravel soils that offer power and refinement.  So beautiful was the Merlot in 2019 that this is, uniquely, a 100% Merlot wine and brilliant it is too.

Deepest ruby, opaque indeed. The nose is arterially dark, with profound red fruits, very pure, almost pointed in their freshness and intensity. The palate is effortlessly balanced with a beautifully cloaked structure, a dark but subtle concentration and a sweet, sustained finish.

Château La Fleur-Pétrus 2019

£830.00

Case of 6

12/06/2020

Some of the most beautiful deep bedded gravel soil on an iron rich sub-soil form the heart of this legendary property, deployed to super effect in 2019.

Intense ruby colour. This is stylishly suave and elegant on the nose with layered, minty red fruits, really vinous. The palate is both fresh and sensual, amply structured but with bright berry fruit and an almost chocolate richness but with a lovely freshness on the finish.

Pessac-Leognan

Château Picque-Caillou Blanc 2019

£82.50

Case of 6

16.5

12/06/2020

90% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Semillon. A creamy, exotically fruited nose of ripe white peach, guava and vanilla pod. The palate is similarly ripe, with viscous stone fruit and pineapple flavours lending a sense of fruit sweetness. 30% new oak, which is very well integrated. Finishes crunchy and precise. A refreshing 12.5% abv. Bottled just before tasting, in May 2020. A convincing early drinker.

The Sauvignon was picked in three lots, on 29th August, then 5th and 11th September. Semillon picked on 9th September.

Château La Grave 2019

£395.00

Case of 12

18

12/06/2020

In our debriefing meeting with Édouard Moueix last week we collectively came to the conclusion that there is no better Pomerol at this price available on the market. It is stunning value but more importantly stunning quality with a beautiful gravel and fine clay soil and a perfectly managed vineyard of just 8 hectares (19.5 acres). Acquired by Christian Moueix in 1971, it is a jewel.

Opaque ruby. Delectable nose of summer pudding and cream, fresh, sweetly plump. The palate is even more profound, beautifully extracted, with well cloaked tannins that make the sensual power deep without being coarse, and with a full chocolatey finish. This is quite simply delectable.

61% Sauvignon Blanc, 38% Semillon, 1% Muscadelle. Very taut and fine, the Sauvignon coming through more than the Semillon (as might be expected given the blend!) as a gentle herbaceous grassiness, with zesty grapefruit and orange rind lending an exotic aspect. Pleasant phenolic grip on the finish brings the palate to a precise point. Picked from 5th to 11th September.

CASE3

18.5

09/06/2020

90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot. Aromatically a delight: roses, violets, peonies, taffeta-fine and beguiling. The palate is racy and inviting on the entry, the fine tannins exerting their grip on the mid, which remains tightly coiled. Finishes savoury and clipped, combining power with utmost precision. As with the best this year, the substantial tannins are tamed and in the process of resolving into a harmonious whole.

St-Emilion

Tertre Roteboeuf 2019

£790.00

Case of 6

18

08/06/2020

This is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, reflecting the vineyard plantings. A quiet, measured nose of blackcurrant and stately cedar, rather regal, with a redcurrant and pomegranate lift. The tender, sweet raspberry-fruited palate is infused with violet perfume, the substantial but wonderfully rounded, supple tannins forming a striking overarching structure. A huge density of fruit and extract, but worn lightly, aided by that trademark Mitjavile freshness. Tight and compacted, a wine of sinewy intensity in barrel, which will no doubt blossom. 100% new oak.

Roc de Cambes 2019

£260.00

Case of 6

18.5

08/06/2020

Roc de Cambes is also 80% Merlot, the remaining 20% being Cabernet Sauvignon rather than Franc. Explosively pretty on the nose – raspberry, kirsch and Parma violets – this has all of the ‘degraded’ fruit character which François so assiduously seeks and which in 2019 he attributes to the rains in September. The merest hint of coffeed oak spice, which will certainly integrate. The palate is so fresh, the impressive fruit density dancing across the mid-palate, the natural salinity and chalky minerality adding a wonderful lightness of touch. 100% new oak.

L'Aurage 2019

£285.00

Case of 12

17.5

08/06/2020

L’Aurage is a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, mirroring the holdings. A glass-staining ruby-purple colour. The nose is wonderfully aromatic – violets and a lick of cedary new oak, with bright lifted red cherry. The palate takes no prisoners, densely packed raspberry coulis and redcurrant on the attack, with firm tannins shaping the palate. A refreshing crunch to the fruit sets off the natural density nicely. Fruit-driven and beautifully poised – a definite touch of the X-factor this year. 100%

90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. A very fine, blackberry-fruited nose, ripe and with a promise of sucrose-laden generosity. The palate is very delicately structured, with an insistent weight of tannin beneath the surface which builds in the mouth. Very fresh acidity ensures the palate remains lithe, buoying the blackcurrant flavours. Less beguiling than in some years (although a couriered sample can never be as fresh), but the finish is where this really shines – long and tapering, so elegant.

A generous yield of 47hl/ha. The Merlot was picked from 18th September, with a pause for the rain, finishing on 10th October. 13.9% abv. pH 3.66. In technical terms, lower tannin than 2018. 37% of production.

Not released

76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Dark, bitter cherry aromas and a hint of coffee. The palate is juicy and plushly fruited, offset nicely by a saline/briny seam and some fresh mint. With time in the glass, the red-fruit spectrum emerges – raspberry and red cherry. The tannins are densely packed, pointing to a Pavillon Rouge with real ageing potential. 27% of production. 14.2% abv.
