Bourgogne Rouge Domaine Joseph Roty 2016

Domaine Joseph Roty is an extraordinary estate, understated yet so comprehensive in the range of wines produced, from Bourgogne Rouge to Grands Crus. The late Joseph Roty's second son, Pierre-Jean, now runs the estate, after his brother Philippe died. Maman Roty and sister Patricia share the responsibility of maintaing benchmark quality. 2016 was, of course, scarred by frost at the end of April. This massively impacted yields at the domaine, with some cuvées totally absent from the line-up this year. Frost aside, the summer was very hot and sunny. Harvest started at the end of September with optimal levels of potential alcohol and acidity

"This Bourgogne Rouge includes fruit which would ordinarily make the Cuvée de Pressioner, which stylistically displays real Gevrey-Chambertin character. It was in fact within Gevrey-Chambertin until 1964, when the boundaries were changed. Sadly Pressonier really suffered in the 2016 frost but the fruit which remained gives this wine a real boost. It reveals lovely violet perfume and pretty rose petals. Pure and expressive this is a lovely rendering of old vine Pinot Noir."
