History
HISTORY
Château La Tour de l’Evêque, was acquired by Gabriel Sumeire in 1958, the first in a long line of winemakers, and still belongs to the family estate.
Formerly belonging to the clergy, the property was the summer residence of the bishops coming from Toulon.
Roger Sumeire, who had already been put in charge of the family estates in 1946, started to work at Château La Tour de l’Evêque with his father, Gabriel, and today his daughter, Régine, is ensuring the continuity of the family’s spirit and work on the land.
Régine made huge investments in 2010 in order to extend their cellar and install state-of-the-art equipment that allows bottling by gravity.
Their pursuit of quality goes hand in hand with respect for traditional viticulture and as a result, the vineyards are run according to organic principles.
VINEYARD
A vineyard in the heart of Provence
The 89 hectare vineyards are planted at the foothills of the “Massif des Maures” mountain range, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The vines are about 20 years old on average and 6 hectares of vines are planted with barley to eradicate nematode infestations.
The Maurettes hills are mainly composed of crystalline bedrock. The soils consist of shale derived from Silurian stages schist -which retains heat and water for an optimal ripening- and Permian red sandstone - which allows good drainage-. The poor level of nutrients pushes the vines to penetrate deeper into the soil and offer more complexity to the wine.
Château La Tour de l’Evêque use only organic viticulture and sustainable winemaking techniques (manual ploughing, no chemical herbicides, animal manure and copper treatments for 3 generations).
Thanks to the family’s’ constant efforts, the wines have been certified organic since 2005.
