West of Saint-Émilion, Château Pindefleur is a 17 hectare estate planted with 35-year-old Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines on a mix of gravel, clay and limestone. The owners believe in a balance between traditional and modernity resulting in a harmonious Saint Emilion, a fine flag-bearer. There is certainly power here, a sense of purpose, yet there is perfume and elegant refinement. Magnum? Great wow factor
"She believes that harmony at Pindefleurs is achieved by balancing traditional philosophy and modern techniques. She has a point. The wines are structured, refined, powerful and delicate, good when young and fresh yet with such ageing potential...something of a paradox. In 2016 this is a profound ruby colour. The nose is darkly fruited, smoky, even sexily fruited. The palate is spicily rich with grainy tannins but avoids the rough trade element through plump, fresh fruit and judicious use of oak. Fine length as well, particularly in magnum format"
