Licanten Malbec Idahue Estate La Ronciere 2017

Savoury Malbec made from slow-ripening grapes found by the sea in Licanten – one of the only four DOs recognised for its unique terroir in 2018. Viña La Ronciere is the only producer in this new DO. There, it combines traditional methods and precision techniques to make terroir-driven wines.

"This is a distinctive style of Malbec, intense and concentrated yet refreshing. Its dark, savoury fruit is complex with hints of leather and spice. The palate is silky and refined, displaying lovely rich fruit with a liquid core and a mineral, graphite undertone. It has firm, ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a graceful, long finish, enhanced by judicious ageing in high quality French oak barrels."

“The wines [Idahue Estate] are uniformly elegant with appealing freshness and varietal typicity. I was charmed by the Malbec 2017 (pepped up by a dash of Merlot and Cabernet Franc).”

Sarah McCleery, The Buyer

“Ripe bramble fruits and impressive freshness given the fruit ripeness, but then this is close to coast. Chewy but supple tannins. A complete wine with long finish. Needs food at the moment. ”

“La Roncière, Idahue Estate Malbec 2017 Licantén is terrific value at £13.95, combining the ripe bramble fruit flavours of the variety and the sunny climate with the impressive freshness and a slight pepperiness, a delicate stony quality, that results from this relatively cool location and longer ripening season.”

Chilean Wine

The quality and availability of Chilean wines have flourished in the last twenty years. While wine consumers worldwide enjoy the easy-drinking charm of Chile’s inexpensive fruity wines, Chile’s wine producers have higher aspirations too, to make stylish, complex wines expressive of their unique origins, wines with a tangible ‘sense of place’, a notion the Europeans call terroir.
