There are nine vineyards, all Grand Cru. Planted to Pinot Noir: Corton, Echézeaux, Grands-Echézeaux, Romanée-St-Vivant, Richebourg and two solely owned by the Domaine – “Monopoles”, La Tâche and Romanée-Conti. There are two, Grand Cru, sites planted to Chardonnay: Corton-Charlemagne, to be made from the 2019 vintage and the sublime, rare Le Montrachet. Co-director Aubert de Villaine, asserts that cultivation and winemaking must be in total obedience to the great terroirs. Producing the best grapes possible and translating them honestly through the winemaking. This belief was shared strongly by Aubert's late co-director, Henry-Frédéric Roch, who sadly died in November 2018. Please view our full announcement here.
This philosophy underpins everything at the Domaine. They are constantly striving to attain superb quality. For what is such a historic Domaine, they are always carrying out research and trials to ascertain the very best practices for the individual sites. After many years of experimentation, contrasting the tried and tested organic viticulture with bio-dynamics, the Domaine is now wholly bio-dynamically farmed. Individual vines are treated with natural preparations according to a strict lunar timetable, a practice which is extremely labour intensive. Yields are amongst the lowest in Burgundy, the greater to increase intensity. Simply put, in a good year, it takes just three vines to make one bottle of Romanée-Conti.
