This project pioneered grape growing in cooler Licanten, a coastal sub-region of Curico Valley, in view of the changing climate. Focusing only on red varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Carignan and Petit Verdot) their aim was to produce fresher, terroir-driven wines. Due to its unique ‘microclimate’ – a combination of refreshing ocean breezes and ancient metamorphic soils – this sub-region has been recognised as a new geographical denomination (D.O.) in Chile. So far, La Ronciere owns the only vineyards established there.
The three Orueta brothers – José Antonio, Andres and Alejandro, who run the winery – developed a detailed study of specific soils and terroirs to decide which grapes to plant in each parcel. Using precision viticulture and technology, they assigned each grape variety to the best possible plots for the development of their full potential. They make use of modern techniques of vine management and winemaking to achieve the highest quality in the final wines. They are also certified by the Wines of Chile Sustainability Code, which means that they are committed to implement long-term initiatives to guarantee a sustainable development.
