Since 2000, Pierre de Benoist, Aubert’s nephew, has managed the Domaine. Pierre is the son of Philippe and Marie-Hélène de Benoist (Aubert’s sister) of our Sancerre Domaine de Nozay. Bouzeron is the sole Aligoté-only appellation in Burgundy. This rather overlooked variety, planted here on the slopes of a warm, sunny valley on nutrient poor soils, high in limestone thrives. It is a particular strain, Aligoté Doré, specifically selected for its naturally low-yielding properties and heightened aromatics, Domaine de Villaine also produces wines from neighbouring Rully and Mercurey.
Pierre, a dynamic manager, combines experience in Sancerre with wisdom gleaned from Aubert, complemented by vigorous ambition for the Bouzeron appellation and a grape variety with unique character and wonderful, natural balance. It was widespread recognition of this character which was ultimately responsible for putting Bouzeron on the map in 1979, when it was awarded its own appellation. The Domaine has been farmed organically since 1986, becoming certified in 1997.
