Petrus

Petrus, based on Pomerol's finest soil is one of Bordeaux's premier estates.

About

All-important here is the vineyard. The Pomerol plateau was formed by geological accident, a long period of freeze-thaw movement during which a buttonhole of clay burst through thin gravel. This area of clay demarcates what has become the vineyard of Petrus, something which simply cannot be replicated. It is a small 11.5 hectare site surrounded by Vieux-Château-Certan, La Conseillante, Gazin and L’Evangile. The vines are old, 45 years on average, but with some very old vines, low-yielding but coaxed into rude health through meticulous plant husbandry. Both vineyard and cellar are overseen by technical Director and oenologist Oliver Berrouet, son of the acclaimed Jean-Claude Berrouet, responsible for Petrus from 1964 to 2014, when he retired. Indisputably one of the most sought-after wines in the world, demand dramatically outstrips supply. Sales the world over are on allocation.

Petrus is planted with 100% Merlot yields strictly controlled. With perfectionism bordering on obsession, the vineyard team redefines haute couture in their care of Petrus throughout the year. The young wine is aged in 50% new French oak for up to 16 months. Severe pre-assemblage vat selection is carried out and certain parcels are rejected from the Grand Vin ensuring exemplary quality.
