Polemico Pais Vina Laurent 2018

Produced from 150 years-old ungrafted vines in Chile's Southern Itata Valley, the original heartland of Chilean wine production from the 16th century, Polemico combines novelty and heritage in a fragrant, supple expression of the little known País grape.

"Supple and fresh with bright fruit and aromas of red cherries and violets, as well as some caramelised undertones. Cheerful and drinkable."

“Perhaps most exciting, though, is the re-emergence of long-lost grape varieties and vineyards. The glorious 2018 Polemico Pais, made from 150-year-old ungrafted pais vines by young French-Chilean wine-making duo and sporting an unusual and very pretty floral perfume, has swiftly changed my mind about the ancient grape.”

Jane MacQuitty, The Times

“The Polemico País from Viña Laurent is made by Frenchman Damien Laurent and his Chilean wife, Lorena. Made from 150-year-old ungrafted wines in the southern Itata Valley, this is a bold (okay, relatively speaking!) País with a huge amount of appeal. Wild-yeast fermented in open-topped barrels, it has smooth, earthy red fruit, a ripe, juicy-mid palate and just the right amount of crunch.”

Sarah McCleery, The Buyer

“I really like Viña Laurent Polemico País 2018 which is made using wild yeast, by Frenchman Daniel Laurent, who comes from a winemaking family and ran Château l’Escart in Bordeaux for 12 years before coming to South America with his Chilean wife. One for sausage and mash, or salami and sourdough, or aubergine salad..”

Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph

Rox Magazine

“A Franco-Chilean winemaking couple and 150-year-old vines are responsible for this light, pure, sweetish red from Southern Chile. Good for drinking without food.”

Jancis Robinson, Financial Times Magazine

Vina Laurent

Damien Laurent grew up among vineyards and used to help his grandfather to fill up wine barrels. After managing Chateau L'Escart in Bordeaux for 12 years, together with his Chilean wife Lorena, he looked for a ‘terroir’ where they could bring their passion to life by making their own wines. Attracted by the beautiful landscape of the Maipo Valley, they discovered its incredible potential, planting their first vineyard in 2008.

Chilean Wine

The quality and availability of Chilean wines have flourished in the last twenty years. While wine consumers worldwide enjoy the easy-drinking charm of Chile’s inexpensive fruity wines, Chile’s wine producers have higher aspirations too, to make stylish, complex wines expressive of their unique origins, wines with a tangible ‘sense of place’, a notion the Europeans call terroir.
