SANDRA TAVARES' WINES

Wine & Soul - Quinta de Chocapalha

portuguese wines

The flourishing table wine scene in Portugal has burst out from under the radar. A new generation of innovative young winemakers are cutting swathes through the outdated view of Portugal as the home of nothing more than Port and nice beaches.

Leading the charge for Portuguese wine at C&B is husband-and-wife team Sandra Tavares da Silva and Jorge Serôdio Borges. Sandra, who has recently been named Portuguese winemaker of the year, was in town the last weekend of May for ‘Festa’, a new London-based celebration of Portuguese wines.

Sandra and Jorge’s organic, old-vine Wine & Soul estate in the heart of the Douro’s Pinhão Valley has become a Portuguese icon. The second da Silva family property is Quinta de Chocapalha, close to Lisbon. This 40 hectare estate is owned by Sandra’s parents, who make a range of wines including the wonderfully crisp and zesty white, Arinto and the older-vine Vinha Mãe (literally Mother Vineyard).

CAKEBREAD CELLARS

Napa Valley - Anderson Valley

Cakebread Cellars wines

The Californian estate was taken over by the Cakebread family in 1973. Initially a small, family-run business based in Rutherford, Cakebread has flourished and its top quality wines are now distributed worldwide. It has, however, remained very much within the family.

The winery has evolved over 50 years from the original twenty-two acres and a small barn to farming 640 acres of estate vineyards up and down Napa Valley and Anderson Valley: the 225 hectares of planted vines cover 13 different vineyards, giving unrivalled access to some of the finest fruit from prime sites across the area. Bruce Cakebread, President of Cakebread Cellars, and winemaker Stephanie Jacobs, make full use of this extraordinary diversity, blending grapes from different sources, microclimates and soils to bring complexity to their wines.

As well as making wine, they also promote Californian locally grown foods for a healthy lifestyle; their famous organic garden kitchen has been an opportunity to showcase the relationship of wine & food. Most of the produce goes straight to the winery kitchen where the chefs build menus around what is in season – truly farm to table!
