Saint-Peray Vieilles Vignes Tardieu-Laurent 2017

Tardieu-Laurent is essentially a super-selective négociant-éleveur, family owned and run. Michel Tardieu is at the helm working alongside with his oenologist son Bastien with his wife Michelle and daughter Camille on administration. The concept of the company centres around Michel’s and increasingly Bastien’s Tardieu's abilities in sourcing small parcels of designated wines from quality fruit, then taking care of their élevage in the Tardieu’s cellar in Lourmarin. Michel has worked tirelessly to build relationships with small growers, over many years, encouraging best practice and sourcing, in the main, low production, old vine fruit. It is Michel’s and Bastien’s meticulous attention to detail, which makes these wines so special. Bastien Tardieu calls this “the little Hermitage Blanc”. 50% Marsanne (50-100 years old) and 50% Roussanne (over 40 years old – the finicky Roussanne is rather uncommon in the northern Rhône so this is a treat). A wonderfully spicy/smoky nose, with pastry notes and a nutty breadth. Yellow flowers. The palate is tangy and concentrated, combining impressive weight with a highline of acidity. Tangerine rind, orange zest, with salty, oyster shell minerality. A big wine this year. It is aged for 12 months in a mixture of new and one year old barrels.

“Creamy, lightly oaked aroma. Some peaches and cream but zesty with citrus too. More oaky on the palate, the freshness and chalky texture counterbalancing the sweetness of the peachy fruit (sweet flavour not sweet in terms of sugar). Slightly bitter peach-kernel finish. Lots of flavour and lovely freshness. Distinctive but well-made oaky style.”
