A domaine that needs no introduction to Volnay fans. Biodynamic since 1996, this much-loved property is run by Frédéric and Chantal Lafarge and their daughter Clothilde, now joined by siblings Maxime-Henri and Eleonore. Frédéric has been at the domaine since 1978, taking over fully following the death of his father, Michel Lafarge, in January 2020. The Clos du Château des Ducs was bought in 1900 by Michel Lafarge’s father. The first wines to be bottled at the domaine in 1934 included Clos des Chênes, the domaine’s largest Volnay premier cru holding.

The vineyards are farmed biodynamically to enhance soil structure and ensure that the wines are a perfect expression of the appellation and the terroir. The wines are made in the traditional Burgundian style with minimum intervention and with the greatest respect for the grapes starting with a severe selection at harvest. Red wines are 100% destemmed. Michel and Frédéric converted to biodynamic viticulture in 1996 and the domaine is now at the forefront of the movement. There is nothing showy here, as a visit to the mould-covered cellars will confirm. The wines are pure, age-worthy and yet quite beautifully delicate.
