René Rostaing is associated with the great names of Côte-Rôtie. Dating back to 1971 he originally started with a holding of 1.5 hectares across the Côte Blonde and Landonne. Today his holdings have expanded to over 4 times the size, with the significant additions being the inheritance of 3.5 hectares from his father in law Albert Dervieux-Thaize in 1990 and a further 1.2 hectares, of particularly older vines, from his uncle Marius Gentaz-Dervieux in 1993. Rostaing’s approach is certainly more modern than other Côte-Rôtie producers but he still holds to some traditional principals. He will normally destem 100% apart from La Landonne which tends undergo a 50% destemming program prior to fermentation in roto-fermentors. However the more traditional side rears in his maturation methods of ageing the wine in older oak barriques – a maximum of 15% new oak, and in 600 litre demi-muids.
