Clau de Nell is located in the village of Ambillou-Château, in Maine et Loire, between Angers and Saumur.

This south-east facing 1.5 hectare site is split between five different owners. The vines are 50 years old, planted at 10,000 vines per hectare on granitic soils, with pebbles under thick, dense clay.

Earthy and mineral, with citrus notes - bitter orange - and opulent cherry liqueur, this has a multi-layered complexity and sensuality. A luscious medley of black cherry, white pepper and spice, gorgeous depth and a supple, well-integrated structure ticks all of the Saint Emilion boxes - elegant and sophisticated and true to place.

Dark fruit and earthy notes prevail on the nose yet the palate leans more towards the red fruit spectrum, the texture silken and supple. This is generous and bright with hints of citrus - orange zest providing an extra dimension - dark chocolate and espresso, layered with fruit and directed by a well-integrated tannic structure through to a very rich, elegant finish.

Intense jet-plum in colour, this offers a blend of crème de mûre, summer berries and dark chocolate on the nose, both ripe and savoury. The darker elements on the nose give way to extraordinary fruit purity and freshness on the palate, combined with a mineral intensity, all set within a luscious, rich frame. Effortlessly balanced, this is a layered and complex wine, with great precision through to a protracted finish - impressive.

This is a 0.66 hectare granite plot of 50 year old vines. The vineyard is currently in fermage (long term rent). Harvested on 30th August, the earliest plot by around four days. Sweet dark berries, with exotic spices and a dark peppery bite.

Without a doubt the best Rocheyron yet, since its beginning in 2010.

From vines around 50 years old, this reveals exotic spice and dried herbs, enchanting from the off , unmistakeably shaped by whole-cluster vinification. Violets and rose petals, ripe raspberry mingling with a leafy herbaceousness. This brims with joie de vivre and in fact increases in potency when left for a few minutes in the glass. The palate has Parma violets and some milk chocolate on the entry, with marked herbal spice. Fleshy red berry fruit is framed by firm tannins, a step up in forcefulness, with nice precise acidity.

A wine of thrilling drive, from an estate which seems to grow in stature with every visit. The 2017 Château Rocheyron is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.
