Opaque plum-ruby, this demands a certain solemnity from the outset, a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot - fathomless. The nose is very complex, with initial, bright primary berries gradually giving way to dark, sombre fruit, spicy, with hints of cedar and earthy minerals. The palate mirrors the aromatics presented on the nose, sweet, spiced black fruit and minerals, very firmly extracted, layered with bitter chocolate and espresso coffee. Dense, there is nonetheless a vibrant, fresh streak, lifting the palate. The spread in the scoring here is due to the very obvious tannin levels. This is so unlike neighbouring Léoville-Barton, much more maverick - audacious in the context of the vintage.
