Sociando-mallet is a highly-respected Haut-Médoc property way up in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadoune, north of Saint-Estephe, overlooking the Gironde. Bought as 5 ha in a semi- ruined state in 1969, by Jean-Gautreau. He invested heavily and it now comprises 120 ha, 83 of which are vines. Sociando-Mallet wines are known for their accessibility in youth - even in user-friendly, longrer-lasting magnum
"Replanting in recent years has altered the proprtion of Merlot, now skewed to 54% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, with an average age of 35 years planted on Gunzian gravels over clay-limestone. The Cabernet, dry-footed ripens well here and Merlot develops complexity - all helped by the proximity of river and ocean both moderating temperatures. 2016 is rounded and sappy with black-fruited finesse, all supported by well-integrated, silky tannins and graphite minerals"
