Dugat-Py En Primeur 2021

Dugat-Py En Primeur 2021

As we announced last month, we are delighted to have been appointed exclusive UK agent for Domaine Dugat-Py. The Dugat family have been growers in Burgundy’s Gevrey-Chambertin since the early 17th century. Loїc Dugat, son of Bernard Dugat, is the 13th generation.

The estate includes four of the great grands crus of the village: Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin. Several wines are labelled “Très Vieilles Vignes”, in recognition of the estate’s particularly old vines, some of which are well over a century old. The average vine age across the estate is over 70 years.  The domaine has been organic since 2003 and follows the lunar calendar, both in the vineyards and the cellar. Several vineyards have recently been converted to the high-trellised tressage system of vine training.

The buildings are located in the historic centre of Gevrey-Chambertin, at the foot of the Combe de Lavaux. Ageing of the wines takes place in the stunning 11th and 12th century cellars beneath the domaine.  Perhaps more importantly than all this, and the historic resonance of the Dugat-Py name, this is an estate which, under Loїc’s direction, has embarked on a renewed path of detail-focused viticulture and sensitive cellar management, the results of which are just beginning to be seen. The tenderness and elegance of recent vintages marks the beginning of the next chapter of Dugat-Py, and one which we are thrilled and honoured to be a part of.

Inevitably the wines are in rather short supply! We expect demand to be high: please let us know what you would ideally like and we shall do our best.

The 2021 vintage will be released soon.

BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR 2019

This comes from five plots, just outside Pommard. Fresh red cherries and vanilla-cinnamon spice aromas. A joyously ripe palate of raspberry and strawberry fruit, succulent and crunchy, with a core of sweetness making for a sumptuously early drinking, approachable style. Lively and refreshing. 100% destemmed and vinified half in stainless steel, half in old oak barrels.

Corney & Barrow Score 16.5 - 17

Recommended drinking from 2021 – 2024

VOLNAY 2019

This wine comes from four plots, two purchased in 1995 and two in 2010, in the middle of the appellation: two in Les Lurets, one in Les Famines and another in Les Paux Bois. A delicate, pure berried nose of raspberry and roses, laced with winter spice. The palate is crisp and harmonious, with poised raspberry fruit and a rocky mineral aspect, with lingering blue-fruited perfume. 100% destemmed.

POMMARD 1ER CRU LES ARVELETS 2019

Les Arvelets is a 0.5 hectare south-facing sloping vineyard beside the domaine’s cuverie, whose red clay soils give high ripeness levels. Blackberry and blackcurrant on the nose, with nice undergrowthy aromas. The palate is pure-fruited, with blackberry and raspberry flavours delivering an impressive clarity of expression. Perfectly weighted, rich but with a sense of lightness, the fruit held in place by fine supporting tannins.

Corney & Barrow Score 17+

Recommended drinking from 2025 – 2030
