THE DOMAINE

Domaine Matrot is a 24 hectare family-owned estate. Based in the centre of the village of Meursault. Both reds and whites are made, with organic certification having been obtained in 2000.

Domaine Matrot En Primeur 2022

Sisters Adèle and Elsa Matrot took over from their father, Thierry Matrot, in the 2016 vintage. Thierry had made the wines here for over three decades alongside the Chef de cave, Gaël Fouré, who has run the cellar at the domaine for nearly as long.

With a history spanning six generations, the story of Domaine Matrot began with Simon Boillot, a winegrower in Meursault during the 1800s. His son, Claude Matrot became a wine merchant who was captivated by the thought of owning his own vines and so in 1900, he purchased three premier crus parcels on behalf of his family.

Just four years later, his son, Joseph Matrot, married Marguerite Amignon – the granddaughter of Simon Boillot. She owned a wine estate with her brother Charles in Meursault and Joseph brought brough with him winemaking savoir-faire passed onto him from his father. Tragically, Charles was killed in 1914 during the war, and so Marguerite and Joseph became the sole owners. They relocated to settle at the domain and develop the business. This house still remains as the headquarters of Domaine Matrot today.

Each generation there after helped nurture the estate and acquire additional plots of vines – expanding from Meursault to incorporate Auxey-Duresses and Bourgogne Pinot Noir. In 2008, after obtaining viticulture qualifications, Elsa joined her parents at the Domaine. Two years later, after achieving her own impressive wine business credentials, Elsa’s sister Adèle arrived.

TASTING NOTES

Domaine Matrot En Primeur 2022

THE 2022 VINTAGE AT DOMAINE MATROT

In the words of Adèle Matrot, “Another very dry and early vintage., this was a generous and promising crop.Picking started in Meursault on 22nd August and the day after for the reds. Very little sorting of Pinot Noir was required – the grapes were very healthy and the yields good.

BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY

This comes mainly from Meursault, where the domaine has four hectares, with the rest coming from the family’s two hectares in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune, beside Maranges, plus 3% from Chablis. Crisp and crunchy white peach and pear fruit, approachable and bright. 30% new oak in 2022. Bottled in August 2023, just before harvest.

SAINT-ROMAIN

The Matrot family makes around 10 barrels of Saint-Romain, the higher-elevation village which is emerging as an appellation to be reckoned with. It is bright and pure-fruited, with crunchy white peach and pear flavours, rounded out with 20% new oak. It is due to be bottled in January 2024.

MEURSAULT

The domaine’s village Meursault is a blend from across the family holdings. The average vine age is 35 years old. Flinty minerality and ripe, pure pear and peach fruit on the palate. This is crisp and crunchy, with lots of personality and green apple deliciousness. 12 months of élevage in 1-5-year-old barrels

MEURSAULT 1ER CRU BLAGNY

The white soils here – limestone and light clay – contribute to a fine chalky texture, which for me is the signature of this wine. Fine, crushed rock minerality and fleshy white peach, with a nice crunch on the finish. Vinified in 1-3-year-old barrels. 25 barrels were made in total. This has been in stainless steel vat since before the 2023 harvest and will be bottled in March 2024.

MEURSAULT 1ER CRU CHARMES

This comes from four sites, totalling just over one hectare. 80% is from the more mineral Charmes du Dessus and 20% from the broader Charmes du Dessous. A wonderfully salty-mineral Charmes, the dominant expression being that of the stonier sites at the top of the slope. It spends 12 months in old oak and then 4-5 months in tank.

BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR

The domaine’s Bourgogne Pinot Noir comes from three parcels, two of which are in Puligny-Montrachet and one in Meursault. This has five days of cold soak to bring out its pretty Pinot perfume. Red fruited and crunchy, it is precise and sustained by juicy acidity, the palate framed by fine, chalky tannins. 10%new oak.

AUXEY-DURESSES

The domaine’s Auxey comes from Les Heptures, close to Les Meix Chauaux, surrounded by the Meursault appellation. This is a cool north-west facing site, 0.5 hectares in size, from which ten barrels were made in 2022. Concentrated red berry fruit, with fine, fruit-coated tannins and fresh acidity. 15-20% new oak.

MARANGES 1ER CRU LA FUISSIÈRE

The grapes for 1er Cru La Fuissière are bought in (from Adèle Matrot’s husband’s Domaine Bachelet-Monnot). The production here was 12 barrels in 2022, from an area of five hectares. Sweetly red-fruited, with plush, fruit-coated tannins. This is harvested a week before the Maranges village, thanks to its natural ripeness. 15-20% new oak.

MEURSAULT ROUGE

This has been one of our favourites for a few years now, a stand-out Pinot Noir from Meursault. Red berry aromas, with a briny seam. The palate is juicy and medium-bodied, highly drinkable. Harvest here started early, on 25th August. 15-20% new oak.

BLAGNY 1ER CRU LA PIÈCE SOUS LE BOIS

An emblematic Côte de Beaune Pinot, made from a plot just above Sous le Dos d’Âne (from where Domaine Leflaive’s Meursault comes) and directly beneath the wood of Blagny – hence sous le bois. Focused, pure red wintery berries. On the palate, juicy acidity balances the medium-bodied palate, teeing up for a succulent, fresh finish. A friendly wine of honesty and purity. 100% destemmed. 20% new oak.
