This AOC actually covers the same region as Madiran (famous for it's full-bodied, tannic reds), and is perhaps best known for its sweet wines, so we were both surprised and delighted on a recent buying trip to discover this arrestingly elegant white wine. Made from a blend of local grape varieties (Arrufiac, Petit Courbu, Mansang), the real triumph of this lovely white is its wonderful balance. It manages to combine delicate white blossom perfume, ripe citrus, even peachy fruit, and satisfying weight in the mouth with a flinty mineral backbone and dry, fresh finish. This rich texture makes it a perfect and versatile food wine, which will match perfectly with fruits de mer, oily fish or even creamier chicken dishes.
