Naranjo Torontel Loncomilla Maturana Wines 2018

Tangy orange wine carefully crafted and produced in tiny quantities. It stays in contact with the pinkish skins of Torontel for 8 months, thus its orange hue. It is made from heritage vines of almost 80 years old located in Loncomilla, a remote sub-region of the Maule Valley in Chile.

"This is an aromatic orange wine with notes of honey, orange peel, white flowers and a potpourri of spices such as cardamom. Refined and lean, it shows a fresh palate, with concentrated and complex flavours."

“It is apricot gold in colour and has an inviting aroma of apricots, ripe peach and orange blossom - deliciously but not excessively fragrant - and it's bone dry. The aromatic intensity and light spiciness is perfectly offset by the fine but definite tannins and freshness on the palate. It might sound like a conundrum but the contrast results in harmony and the wine is very kindly priced.”

Julia Harding MW, Purple Pages

“Naranjo Torontel 2019 [aka Torrontés] is a fine orange wine made from fruit sourced from 80-year-old vines. Aromas of spice, pepper and strawberry juice lead to a palate that has impressive drive and complexity. One of the smartest orange wines I have tasted recently at the price.”

“I confess I had never heard of Torontel, one of the varieties that go to make the famous South American spirit Pisco, but the variety – part of the Muscat family – works crackingly well in this natural orange wine. Quite full on, rounded and aromatic, with undertones of spice, pear and pepper, the wine has eight months skin contact and is made from 80 year old vines. Different, well-priced and well worth trying.”

Chilean Wine

The quality and availability of Chilean wines have flourished in the last twenty years. While wine consumers worldwide enjoy the easy-drinking charm of Chile’s inexpensive fruity wines, Chile’s wine producers have higher aspirations too, to make stylish, complex wines expressive of their unique origins, wines with a tangible ‘sense of place’, a notion the Europeans call terroir.
