Jean-Pierre Moueix

2012 Vintage

Well, these are probably the wines of the vintage. There was an element of luck of course, not unlike the luck in 1998, with the Merlot grape ripening a couple of weeks earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon and which in 2012 was largely bubbling merrily and safely in the vats as the heavy October rains set in. Nevertheless the insinuating, delectable, graceful quality of these Moueix wines is also due to the meticulous husbandry of the vineyards, the coolly detached finessing of the undoubted difficulties of the vintage and above all the opportunism shown during the magnificent heart of the growing season from the end of July until mid-end September.

““I think that the when people review the 2012 vintage they’ll probably say that Pomerol came out on top and the Pomerol’s I tasted were really extremely good.”
Stephen Spurrier, April 2013

Clos de Tart, Burgundy

2011 Vintage

2011 at the Clos is a fine vintage, as every year unique, yet with nuances reminiscent of 2007’s charm and the classicism and freshness of 2010 allied to some of the density of 2009. These are wines with intensity, purity and focus, with a serious side and hints of, as yet, hidden depths.

“As we have already mentioned in 2010, the 2011 vintage is a ‘vigneron’s’ (grower’s) vintage, where hard work, foresight, anticipation, rigour, making the decisions at the right time, in a word, experience, are the key factors for success.”
Sylvain Pitiot, March 2013

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue, Burgundy

2011 Vintage

It is the responsibility of the greatest Domaines to finesse the best and worst qualities of any given vintage. Domaine de Vogüé has lifted the naturally attractive qualities of the 2011 – its freshness, amiability and medium weight – into another level altogether. Here are offered wines of intensity, focus and above all purity and transparency alongside the more seductive qualities of sweetness and silken ripeness.

“This is a very open vintage, yet you are not running at high speed – so just take your time with it.”
François Millet, November 2012

Tenuta di Biserno, Bolgheri, Italy

2009 Vintage

There are over 600 years of winemaking legacy in the Antinori family, spanning 26 generations. Small wonder, then, that the name reverberates throughout the wine world. Steeped in this history, Marchese Lodovico Antinori is set apart, however – pitched at a unique frequency. Legendary, maverick, genius, visionary, headstrong – all are appropriate adjectives to describe him, but his imagination, vision and drive have created peerless, world-class wines in the past and this, his latest and, he declares, ultimate project, is a testament to his unique talents.

‘Biserno 2009 is a long and steady wine. I like vintage 2009 because it is different, less opulent than the previous ones, but elegant and long-lasting.’
Marchese Lodovico Antinori, January 2013

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Burgundy

2010 Vintage

The Domaine’s 2010’s exhibit all the hallmarks of a great vintage – intricately ripe fruit, subtle concentration, intensity and above all purity and transparent fidelity to their individual terroirs. These are fine, fine wines.

Domaine Leflaive, Burgundy

2011 Vintage

This is a fine vintage. It possesses some of the density and charm of 2009 and elegance and tension of 2010, but unsurprisingly has a unique style that, in the margin of the tasting notes is described as ‘poised’ and ‘tender’ both perfectly useless words to the analytical, but perhaps helpful to the drinker…

“Subtle, delicate…a vintage which can happily be discovered in its youth.”
Anne-Claude Leflaive, December 2012

Andrea Franchetti, Italy

2011 & 2010 Vintages

From both his Tuscan and Sicilian estates, Andrea produces a portfolio of wines which is rich, diverse and exceptional in every sense; from the locations of the vineyards through to the finished wines. We are delighted to represent both the Tuscan and Sicilian estates in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and, most recently, Singapore. Here we are offering, en primeur, the 2011 vintages of Trinoro and Palazzi, from the Tuscan estate as well as the 2010 vintage of Le Cupole. From Etna, from 2011, we present Franchetti and the estate’s white wine Guardiola as well as the eponymous Passopisciaro from 2010.

“We marvel at the goals Andrea sets himself and more importantly, the formidable results he achieves.”
Alison Buchanan, December 2012

Burgundy Release

2011 Vintage

There has seldom been an era when three really good but contrasting vintages have arrived in succession. The tastings promise to be very exciting. Two years ago we had the quasi-exoticism of 2009, open, accessible and for some purists a little too flattering. Then 2010 arrived to make traditionalists smile – a return to Burgundian’s hallmark freshness and purity. 2011 is different again, ripe and rounded certainly but with bright acidity too.

“Our selection was assembled through successive tastings during a week-long trip. We have chosen the wines on the basis of their quality and they come from producers with whom we have been fortunate to enjoy strong, long-term relationships.”
Alison Buchanan, January 2012

Cantina Giacomo Conterno, Italy

Mixed Vintages

As always with this release, we are offering an array of vintages. The Barberas are released younger (2010 vintage) than the Barolo (2008 vintage), due to the additional length of time needed to age the latter. The 2009 Cerretta Langhe Nebbiolo, after three years in barrel could, but will not, be labelled as Barolo and is therefore a bit of a steal. Excitingly, we also have a Riserva to release this year – Monfortino 2005. The production of Monfortino is restricted to exceptional vintages and is only released when Roberto feels the wine is ready. We never quite know what will be released and precisely when – and arguably Roberto would attest that he is in the same position. The wine decides. Monfortino Riserva, due to such small quantities, will be allocated.

“Hard work and attention to detail, allied to near fanatical traditionalism and perfectionism, has produced award-winning wines year-on-year.”

Domaine Trapet Père & Fils, Gevrey-Chambertin

2011 Vintage

We have enjoyed a long relationship with the Trapet family, dating back to the 1960s. In recent years the Domaine has enjoyed a well-documented surge in quality, now under the stewardship of the seventh generation, Jean-Louis Trapet. We are delighted and proud to represent their wines exclusively in the UK

“Our history with Corney & Barrow is long and enduring, built to last. Today we are delighted to extend this relationship and to entrust our wines to their care.”

Bonneau du Martray, Burgundy

2011 Vintage

The 2011 vintage at Bonneau du Martray suffers little by comparison with the brilliant 2010. What makes the 2011 exciting is the precocity of the growing season which is almost always the key to potential greatness. This feature, shared with the 2003, 2007 and 2009 vintages is also the greatest point of difference with 2010 so any comparison made with 2010 is purely qualitative, not stylistic. 2011, as the tasting notes suggest, shares the intensity, precision and focus of 2010 but has an altogether more seductive, lissom, insinuating quality, more physical if you like, which will please the hedonists as much as the purists. It is a lovely wine.

"What we have here are very different wines that compare with those of 2010 – despite being produced in almost opposite conditions."

2011 Vintage

The Mendoza-based company Achaval Ferrer soared to worldwide recognition at a ferocious rate for such a young company. They enjoyed widespread third party plaudits from the outset. We are delighted to represent the wines exclusively in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm, Germany

2011 Vintage

The 2011 vintage is characterised by a wonderful articulation of the particularity of the individual vineyard sites, across every degree of ripeness. Often rather reticent in youth, all of the wines are energised and expressive, wonderfully fresh and focused.

“Attractive flavours and an impressive balance in the wines already at this early stage in development is striking, promising an earlier accessibility. At the same time, the complexity, elegance and excellent structure indicates a great ageing potential.”
Katharina Prüm, June 2012

Hyde de Villaine, California

2008, 09 & 10 Vintages

This year’s offer is extremely exciting; these are beautiful wines with personality and a clear sense of place that will certainly further advance the estate’s reputation. The hallmark of all four of the Hyde de Villaine wines is their inimitable minerality and a very obvious freshness – thanks both to natural terroir and fastidious vineyard management.

“We are delighted to present our third release from Hyde de Villaine, a very fine collection of wines from Carneros, California for which we were delighted to be awarded the exclusive representation back in 2010.”

Tardieu Laurent, Rhône

2011 Vintage

Established in 1996, the Tardieu-Laurent wines turned heads from the outset. We were fortunate enough to have been introduced to the wines by Anne-Claude Leflaive, several years ago, when Michel Tardieu was then in partnership with Burgundian Dominique Laurent. Fifteen years down the road this is now wholly a family business allowing total independence and freedom to pursue Michel’s philosophy, to the maximum, without any impediment.

“A summer like spring, a spring-like summer and an optimal autumn… This more or less summarises the vintage.”
Michel Tardieu, September 2012

Peter Sisseck

2011 Vintage

Without doubt, the 2011 vintage will be remembered for its maturity and soft tannins. The wines in the making already show a certain likeness to the 2009 vintage, with rich finesse and mature tannins.
Peter Sisseck, June 2012

Dominio de Pingus is one of the most iconic, highly sought-after wines in the world today, as well as Flor de Pingus and Psi, the most recent recruit to the Pingus portfolio. We are delighted to present here Peter Sisseck’s 2011 vintage – three exceptional, inimitable wines which are so true to their Spanish origins.

Benjamin Romeo

2011/10/07 Vintages

Benjamin Romeo is extraordinarily passionate, Latin in temperament, with a typically Spanish disregard for the passage of time, yet nonetheless obsessive about detail and order. His perceptiveness and ambition are perhaps his greatest gifts, from which nothing and nobody will deflect him. His wines are so individual yet they are faithful to their origins, with that all-important sense of place. These are in fact supreme examples of Rioja which, in true Benjamin fashion, do not conform to the more usual labelling conventions. This year we are also able to offer a small quantity of Gran Reserva produced as a homage to Benjamin’s mother, his father having been honoured with Viña de Andres. We are delighted to present Carmen Gran Reserva 2007.

Château Pétrus

2011 Vintage

Olivier has succeeded wondrously with relatively short macerations and critically, very limited and gentle pump-overs. I believe this is the main reason for the ensuing profundity of the 2011 and its comparison with a vintage that is one of the greats at this extraordinary estate.

Château Trotanoy

2011 Vintage

Trotanoy produces incredible wines with an extraordinarily rare balance between obvious power, richness, concentration and finesse. Often monolithic and almost impenetrable in youth, age offers opulence and broad, generous flavours, always with a freshness and balance which lifts the power and makes Trotanoy one of the greatest of all wines that you actually want to drink.

Ets Jean-Pierre Moueix

2011 Vintage

The best wines in 2011, and these are among the best, may reasonably be compared to those of 2001. Unquestionably in the shadow of the powerfully classic 2010’s, and debauched, majestic 2009’s these 2011’s will, as with so many underestimated vintages, exceed expectations. Some are touched by greatness, others by silken charm; all, even at the highest level, possess supreme value – that delicately balanced act of price and quality that has sadly been so often noticeable by its absence in Bordeaux these last few years.

François and Louis Mitjavile, Bordeaux

2011 Vintage

The wonderful wines of François Mitjavile and his son Louis are always a highlight of the En Primeur campaign. Olivier Leflaive, Burgundy

2011 Vintage

Olivier’s 2011 white Burgundies offer classic drinking from every appellation, from a vintage of good quality. Their soft-textured appeal is highly flattering this year, particularly at the bourgogne blanc and village level, providing delicious early drinking. While the best lieux-dits and premier cru sites will exhibit a similar immediate charm, their greater depth of structure and profile will reward keeping in the medium term.

Clos de Tart, Burgundy

2010 Vintage

“The 2010 vintage is outstanding – a “vine-grower’s vintage” where hard work, foresight, anticipation, rigour, making the right decisions at the right time, in a word: experience, were the key factors for success.”
Sylvain Pitiot, February 2012

2010, Sylvain Pitiot’s fifteenth vintage at Clos de Tart is exceptional – really fine. We were delighted with what we found here, given that generic reports of the vintage had been far from encouraging. A plethora of challenges had faced Sylvain and his team but they met these head-on, working assiduously in the vineyard, playing to the strengths of the growing season.

Château Rocheyron, Bordeaux

2010 Vintage

We are proud that Corney & Barrow has been appointed exclusive agent for Château Rocheyron Grand Cru Saint- Emilion in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. This is the most recent brainchild of Peter Sisseck, owner of the iconic Dominio de Pingus, and we showed it for the first time at Corney & Barrow’s Annual Winter tasting, at the Tower of London, in November 2011. Château Rocheyron is a jewel of a property, supremely well-sited in the hamlet of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, just 3.6km from the centre of Saint-Emilion, on the edge of the celebrated limestone plateau.

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, Burgundy

2010 Vintage

“There is something almost frightening about this vintage because of its transparency. It is so clear and so pure.” François Millet, March 2012

2010 was a vintage of attrition in which the terms of the debt presented for a frequently profound quality were very onerous indeed. It became clear that this quality would never have been achieved with a large or even average sized crop. As the tasting notes suggest, these are lovely wines.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Burgundy

2009 Vintage

“ It is a vintage of high lineage, at the level of the wonderful grapes that we harvested...” Aubert de Villaine, January 2012

2009 is thought of as an effortless vintage, where the overall style is of ease, of silken grace and of almost lazy amiability. It is a complacent view. It is not a vintage to be judged so simply nor indeed cynically put down by the intellectual purists as merely a pleasure giver of no great profundity.

Domaine Leflaive, Burgundy

2005 Vintage

As joint UK agents, it is exciting to be able to offer directly, ex Domaine, an allocation of the 2005 vintage, from the Domaine Leflaive library stocks. This is a rare opportunity indeed, the result of our very close and longstanding relationship with the Domaine. The provenance of these wines is unmatched – a feature which assumes even greater importance with more mature wines that are drinking now or are approaching drinkability. After several recent tastings and having read through our original tasting notes and the vintage report for 2005, both listed in the full release, we see little need to amend them.

Domaine François Carillon, Burgundy

2010 Vintage

Domaine François Carillon, although recently founded, can trace its ancestry back to the 16th Century, with François himself the sixteenth generation of farmers. The Domaine is borne of Domaine Louis Carillon, Louis being François’ father, now retired. François and his brother Louis took over the family Domaine on their father’s retirement, and in 2010 they elected amicably to split the estate holdings and thus Domaine François Carillon was established. We are delighted now to represent the Domaine exclusively in the United Kingdom. 2010 is an exceptional vintage - superb wines and a brilliant début for François.

Burgundy En Primeur

2010 Vintage

2009 was what the French call a millésime très médiatique (very high profile), due to near perfect climatic conditions across the growing season and through to harvest. 2010, as we will see, was much more challenging. There are however increasingly vocal dissenters regarding 2009, citing that it is atypical and rather exotic. For those who hold that view, 2010 marks a return to more usual Burgundian freshness and purity. This collection has been assembled after successive tastings with wines chosen on the basis of their quality from producers with whom we have been fortunate to enjoy strong, long-term relationships.

Domaine Leflaive, Burgundy

2010 Vintage

There is perhaps nothing as intellectually satisfying as revisionist opinion. So it is with 2010 where a clinical study of the growing season contrasted, often painfully, with the voluptuous, lazy style of the hedonistic 2009’s. Despite a severely reduced crop, it is clear that this was a vintage of quite startling quality. This is worth emphasizing because that quality would simply not have been possible without the significant human reduction of the crop. It would not have ripened, it would not have stood a chance of homogeneity, nor finally would it have achieved the silken intensity that is the hallmark of the greatest 2010’s.

Domaine Bonneau du Martray, Burgundy

2010 Vintage

It is this dauntingly ancient tradition of stewardship that has rested so lightly on Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière since he took over the running of the Domaine in 1994. Under his direction and profound belief in continuity, Domaine Bonneau du Martray has achieved a fundamental and even majestic quality that is now acknowledged throughout the winemaking world. This is today one of Burgundy’s greatest wines.

Tenuta di Biserno, Italy

2008 Vintage

“The weather conditions in 2008 allowed the creation of very elegant wines. The characteristics are exactly those that made the wines from Alta Maremma famous around the world with wine lovers and collectors; at a young stage the tannins give the impression that 2008 will have a longer ageing capacity if compared to the warmer 2007 vintage. 2008, along with 2001, are the greatest vintages of the decade.”

A mix of vintages - the Barberas are released younger (2009 vintage) than the Barolo (2007 vintage), due to the additional length of time needed to age the latter. Achaval Ferrer, Argentina

2009 & 2010 Vintages

Over the past few years, Achaval Ferrer has developed something of a cult status internationally, winning a plethora of awards – richly deserved. Their ambitions have been refined over the years as other, rather polished, modern wines have entered the market. Pursuit of excellence is just one element but undeniably is also a primary goal. There are now five wines in total, each with very individual personalities. They transcend what we would ordinarily expect of Argentinean wines, offering a wonderful balance of opulence, accessibility and classicism..

Tardieu-Laurent, Rhône

2010 En Primeur Release

These are world class wines which deserve their international acclaim. 2010, even in its infancy, was a revelation. A low yielding vintage with naturally low yielding vines has definitely presented a challenge - but the limited nature of the crop was in fact advantageous. The patient vignerons were able to wait for optimal, phenolic maturity. What fruit there was, ultimately, was essentially perfect with an impeccable balance between intensity and fresh acidity.

“The 2010 vintage is an excellent year for laying down. The quality of the wines has lived up to our expectations – offering some compensation for the yields being extremely low.”
Michel Tardieu, May 2011

Hyde de Villaine, California

En Primeur Release

Last year we launched a highly prized new exclusivity, Hyde de Villaine; a beautiful estate located in relatively cool Carneros, in California’s Napa Valley. Hyde de Villaine is a project borne of a meeting of two great talents, supported by a gifted and enthusiastic team. We at Corney & Barrow are extremely proud to be part of this exciting venture. The resulting wines are extraordinary. They combine a degree of the finesse, elegance and refinement, which most of us would associate with European wines, with a balance of richness and vitality afforded by the relatively cool, windy climate of the Carneros region.

“The hallmark of all four of the Hyde de Villaine's wines is their inimitable minerality and a very obvious freshness - thanks to both natural terroir and fastidious vineyard management.”

Port Declaration

2009 Vintage Release

2009, as a vintage declaration, arrived, true to form, just as we were all gearing up for the start of the Bordeaux en primeur campaign. We were initially a little surprised as although weather conditions, in many cases, more than warranted a full declaration, it is still rather unusual to have four fully attested vintages from the main houses, within a decade. The vintage has not been announced across the board – but what we tasted was so good that the decision to come out was made by the wines themselves. Of the two main dynasties, The Fladgate Partnership declared all of their wines whilst the Symingtons confined themselves to their habitual single Quintas – Vesuvio and Dow’s Senhora da Ribeira, plus a very small quantity of a special Warre bottling, see full details in the link below. In addition, we are offering two extremely fine examples from our good friends Cristiano Van Zellar, Sandra Tavares and Jorge Serodio Borges, Vale Dona Maria and Pintas respectively.

“We have not seen colour intensity and tannic grip like this in over twenty years….the quality of the fruit is impressive and the wines are supported by excellent acidity.”
David Guimaraens, Head Winemaker, The Fladgate Partnership

Bordeaux, ‘The Value Wines’

2010 Vintage Release

2010 is clearly a very, very fine vintage and importantly varies hugely from its now famous predecessor. We have put a full report on the website but in brief the 2010’s are very classical, richly structured and “grown-up” wines that lovers of Bordeaux should not be without. This quality also extends to the dry and sweet whites, which is not always the case. Much has been written in the press about the pricing of this vintage but what remains a fact is the quality of the wines. This offer focuses on what is, and should always be, our main role, namely selecting wines we feel will offer great value drinking in the years ahead. There are old friends amongst the wines that we have always followed and some new “rising stars”.

“A very great vintage that will match standards of its illustrious predecessor- what luck indeed!.”
François Mitjavile, March 2011

Olivier Leflaive, Burgundy

2010 Vintage Release

The 2010 vintage looks set to be impressive in quality terms, even if there will be little to go around. Low yields and small, concentrated berries have given wines with a sense of fullness, intensity yet finesse. These wines will show their individual terroir markedly, more so than wines from warmer vintages which, while immensely flattering, can seem to lose their precise bone structure as they take on flesh. Olivier Leflaive’s 2010s were picked relatively early, reflecting Franck Grux’s desire to preserve the wines’ fraîcheur and sense of breeding.

“2010 – a vintage of grace, race and verve, concluding a fine trilogy.”
Franck Grux, Technical Director, March 2011

Clos de Tart, Burgundy

2009 Vintage Release

2009 is truly exceptional, a vintage which everyone tries to compare with 2005. In fact the vintages have relatively little in common except in producing exceptionally fine wines. At Clos de Tart the quality of the end crop was, in Sylvain’s opinion, at least as good as in 2005, with the difference being the greater work required to achieve that quality in 2009.

“I tasted the six component parts of this wine from barrel, rather than the finished blend, but its potentially amazing, with real structure, perfumed oak and floral finesse.”
Tim Atkin, February 2011

Champagne Salon

1999 Vintage Release

We seem to have waited such a long time to launch Salon 1999, a vintage of monumental stature in the history of the champagne region. As such, it seems fitting that this – only the 37th vintage made of this extraordinary champagne and likely to be one of its finest exponents – should mark the end of the 20th century; itself a monumental event.

“As ever finely wrought, Salon 1999 rides the knife-edge of finesse and power with characteristic panache.”
Rebecca Palmer, March 2011

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, Burgundy

2009 Vintage Release

The hook on which the seamless, almost casual, confidence of 2009 hangs rested in a cool, north east wind that took the self-satisfied complacency of the growing season onto a more compelling level of potential greatness. It was perhaps this wind that gave the Domaine’s wines, in particular, their quality of freshness and grip alongside the effortlessly seductive and opulent density for which this vintage as a whole will be remembered. The results, as Jean-Luc Pépin rather laconically remarked, “are probably great, yes”.

“Summer 2009 was the kind of summer where you’re having a Sunday lunch outside but unlike a really hot summer, you wished to remain at the table rather than retreating indoors. It was warm but there was an energizing breeze that cooled and refreshed.”
Jean-Luc Pépin, March 2011

The Wines of Andrea Franchetti

2009 & 2008 Vintages

Never one to obey convention, Andrea Franchetti creates and releases wines when he feels it is right to do so. In 2009, the first time in a while, he created Palazzi - a wine which we first offered in 1998. We loved the wine, as did our customers, but Andrea stopped making it as it was ‘too easy’ - such is the mark of the man. We are very pleased Andrea is releasing it once again. From both his Tuscan and Sicilian estates, Andrea has produced a portfolio of wines which is rich, diverse and exceptional in every sense; from the locations of the vineyards through to the finished wines in the glass. We marvel both at the goals he sets himself and, more importantly, the formidable results he achieves.

“2009 is the second vintage that has passed Trinoro leaving us at with a feeling of the tropics; each of our varietals ripened slowly and the rains let us wait long enough to pick them: that always makes a great vintage… this (the eponomous wine) is one of the best wines ever made at Trinoro.”
Andrea Franchetti, November 2010

Hacienda Monasterio, Ribera del Duero, Spain

2005 & 2007 Vintages

We are delighted to have been working with Peter Sisseck from the launch of Hacienda Monasterio in 1993. Worldwide acclaim proves just how successful he has been at firstly Hacienda Monasterio and then his personal projects of Dominio de Pingus, Flor de Pingus and, most recently, PSI. All these wines have soared to worldwide acclaim. Hacienda Monasterio is markedly different geologically from Peter’s other projects – more Médoc-like, alluvial with deposits of clay. Like the Médoc, this is raised seabed with crustacean fossils: fascinating terroir from a winemaking perspective, revealing just how complex and varied the ingredients of the region can be.
