Case of 6

22/06/2020

80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Violets, blueberry and raspberry fruit on the lifted, aromatic nose. Darker berries on the attack – blackberry and cassis – with a generous sweetness and succulence of fruit on the midpalate, before the beautifully fine, yet firm, grippy tannins impose themselves, aided by that limestone precision and taut acidity. This is a powerfully decadent Rocheyron for the long term, silky and sculpted, with a driving finish of rich berries and dark chocolate flavours. Bravo Peter! 40% new oak.

71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc. Parma violets, raspberry and svelte cedary blackcurrant on the nose. The palate is reassuringly weighty on the attack, a creamy density making you sit up and pay attention. A beautifully pitched mid-palate, with regally fruit-coated tannins, which are very fine. Really impressive. 60% new oak.

18/06/2020

La Croix de Ducru Beaucaillou     St Jul      50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. Very deep ruby colour, with violet and raspberry aromas. The palate is both silky and dense, with forest fruit and blackcurrant. The highest levels of tannins and anthocyanins ever – “wines for eternity” according to Bruno Borie.

In 2010, this wine’s label was re-designed by Jade Jagger – the idea was a play on words between the Rolling Stones and ‘Caillou’ (no one picked up on it apparently!)

18/06/2020

80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot. Blackcurrant and cedar on the nose, with very pretty violet and peony aromas. The palate is creamily dense and tightly compacted, with a revitalising acidic lift which brings out the cassis and raspberry flavours. The tannins are fine yet plushly fruit-coated, making for a full bodied Ducru for the very long term. Cropped below 40hl/ha.

Bruno Borie mentioned 2018, 2010 and 2009 as possible vintage similarities – 2019 is a “solar” vintage, like 2009, but has the “academic” side of 2010 also. He said it is “certainly the richest wine we have ever produced”.

This is the second vintage offered under Moueix ownership, of this jewel-like ancient vineyard that lies immediately below the old 1st Growth Château Magdelaine and therefore neighbours the profoundly great Bélair-Monange. Just 2.3 hectares (5.6 acres) in size, C&B is proud to have the largest – the word is relative – allocation in the UK.

Deepest ruby colour. The nose shows high toned red and black fruits with that delectable Cabernet Franc leafy perfume, but the palate is more sonorous, firmly but amply structured, subtly sweet and dense, beautifully extracted and long to the finish.

Sophie Fourcade is an old friend with whom we have been working with since 1987 (with a slight break in 1997 when we shared different views on pricing!) It is a joy to rekindle the relationship – again a C&B exclusivity – with the vineyard, all 1.3 hectares (3 acres) of it, now perfectly aged and of course beautifully sited between the 1st Growths Grand Cru Beau-Séjour Bécot and Beauséjour Duffau Lagarrosse with the tinkling bells of a third 1st Growth Château Angélus somewhat further down on the plains.

Profound colour of deepest ruby. The nose is high toned and spicy, strawberry fruited at first then a denser, more muscular, meaty perfume. The palate is sweetly structured, dense again, with a briary, chewy concentration, a touch of oak and significant length. Bravo!

65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot. A welcoming nose of inky blackcurrant and dark chocolate, with well integrated cedary oak aromas. The palate is succulent and eminently drinkable, expressive forest fruits balancing well with the ripe tannins which have been kept in check expertly, exerting the merest grip on the finish. A compelling wine, which will drink early and should prove good value.

40% new oak. 70% of the total red wine crop. The Merlot was picked between 18th and 27th September; the rest between 2nd and 10th October.

PREMIER GRAND CRU CLASSÉ

I have said this before but it is worth remembering that in the 19th and deep into the 20th century this was Saint-Émilion’s greatest property. The ambition of Édouard Moueix, whose family home it is, is to bring back that reputation and 2019 is undoubtedly another step towards that objective. I actually scored it fractionally higher than both 2018 and 2016.

Opaque ruby colour to the rim, wonderfully stylish, cedary rich nose of black and rich fruits, elegant and pure. The palate is flawlessly balanced with supple, effortlessly ripe bright fruit, profound but ripe tannins as if both embracing and shrugging off the vintage and a concentrated, powerful finish that wears its power lightly. Great wine.

Château Certan de May 2019

£480.00

Case of 6

12/06/2020

This vineyard is of course sited on Pomerol’s famous central plateau and is the immediate neighbour of Vieux Château Certan. It is distinctive for many reasons, not least its relatively high levels of Cabernet Franc (30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) in support of the Merlot and the fact that the legendary Jean-Claude Berrouet – Olivier’s father – is the consultant wine maker.

At just 5.5 hectares (13.5 acres) and lying on the famous clay-gravel soil, the 2019 possess that distinctively perfumed wild red fruit noise, spicy and arterial.  The palate is seductive, creamy, almost debauched with a chewy concentration, excellent extraction and super length. How lovely to see this great estate returning to top distinctive form.

12/06/2020

Close neighbour to Certan de May and Vieux Château Certan, this is the glorious remnant of the old Certan Giraud vineyard, the heart of which, on blue clay and red gravel soil was retained by the Moueix family to produce arguably the most tender and delectable of all their wines. It is a triumph in 2019.

Opaque, black, ruby colour. The nose is creamily rich and darkly fruited with hints of coffee. The palate is silky and dense, sweetly flavoured, with a supple, sensual concentration, effortlessly ripe and with a lovely burst of freshness on the finish. Super wine.

Another bullseye from the beloved “Barry White”, a tiny 7 hectare (17 acres) vineyard situated in Saint-Sulpice de Faleyrens, but in the gravel and clay rather than pure sand part which gives this wine a subtle density. Opaque ruby in colour, a delectable nose of bright red fruits, super plump and ripe. The palate is sweet and juicy, supple and chunky with a higher Merlot (89%) content perhaps giving this a fatter, more approachable style. Very good indeed.

By popular demand, we are reinstating our “Barrel of Barry” offer of 25 cases (a barrel equivalent) at the below price. The perfect way to avoid running out of this go-to drinker!
