Finally a morning came with no rain! It was however a very early start with a tour and tasting at Les Carmes Haut-Brion a property we have followed for some time now. They have a totally new set up being built that should see the great progress at this estate continue on and on. The 2014 is certainly quite a wine.

There was then two UGC tastings. First Pessac & Graves at Smith Haut Lafite where several wines showed really well. The hosts and Domaine de Chevalier have both producer a great pair of wines, different in styles but very good. Our friend Pauline Calvet at Picque Caillou must also be very happy with his wines.

The Pauillac & St.Estephe UGC was at Lynch Moussas, a chateau I had never visited. This was another high quality showing with some very lovely wines with good fruit and proper structure. Some geat value wine also like the St.Estephe trio of: Lafon Rochet, Ormes de Pez & Phelan Segur.

We then made out way to Pontet Canet to taste the impressively broad and full 2014 with Melaine Tessseron follow by a glass of the rather lovely 2008 with Lunch. It was a rather heaving scene with many press and trade.

The UGC tasting of St.Julien’s followed at Leoville Poyferre where the standard of wines was, as it often is, very high. Not a bad wine in the room and many exception ones. Among them Leoville Poyferre, Beychevelle and the Bartons. They also had a great tasting set up, all the basics covered and a rather splendid inflatable sofa or two.

North now to two of the leading lights of St.Estephe, Calon Segur & Cos d’Estournel. Calon has seen much physical development and minor winemaking tweaking in the last few years. The 2014 they have made is very good. Cos is taking on a more refined style too now and this is very welcome…both tasting were good, Cos Blanc as stood out as a success in 2014.

Back at the hotel is was great to do an interview with the Bordeaux based journalist – Jane Anson. A simple supper followed before an early last night in Bordeaux.
