Wine Region

Côte de Beaune, France

Vineyard

24 hectares

Domaine Matrot is a 24-hectare family-owned estate based in the centre of Meursault. Both reds and whites are made, with organic certification having been obtained in 2000. Sisters Adèle and Elsa Matrot (pictured here) took over from their father, Thierry Matrot, in the 2016 vintage. Thierry had made the wines here for over three decades alongside the Chef de Cave, Gaël Fouré, who has run the cellar at the domaine for nearly as long. With a history spanning six generations, the story of Domaine Matrot began with Simon Boillot, a winegrower in Meursault during the 1800s. His son, Claude Matrot, became a wine merchant who was captivated by the thought of owning his own vines and so in 1900, he purchased three premier cru parcels on behalf of his family. Each generation thereafter helped nurture the estate and acquire additional plots of vines — expanding from Meursault to incorporate Auxey-Duresses and Bourgogne Pinot Noir. Elsa joined her parents at the domaine in 2008, followed by Adèle in 2010.

WHITE WINES

BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY

The core of this wine is from Meursault, where the domaine has four hectares. The rest comes from the family’s two hectares in the Hautes — Côtes de Beaune, near Maranges, and a little from Chablis. Lime rind and pear skin aromas, with a fleshy core of fruit on the palate. Crunchy and precise on the finish. 20% new oak. Bottled in August 2024, just before harvest.

SAINT-ROMAIN

The Matrot family makes around 10 barrels of Saint-Romain, the higher elevations safe guarding freshness. Fleshy and substantial, this is a joyful wine in 2024, the white peach fruit delineated by chalky minerality and nervy acidity. 20% new oak. It is due to be bottled in January 2025.

MEURSAULT

The domaine’s village Meursault is a blend from across the family holdings. The average vine age is 35 years old. A wine of impressive density and concentration, in which pear and peach fruit meet chalky extract. Good clarity with taut acidity. 12 months of élevage in 1–5-year-old barrels.

MEURSAULT 1ER CRU BLAGNY

The white soils here limestone and light clay contribute to a fine chalky texture, which for me is the signature of this wine. White flower perfume, crushed rock minerality and a little struck match on the nose. The palate is chalky mineral, with a great drive and energy. Vinified in 1-3-year-old barrels. This has been in stainless steel vat since before the 2024 harvest and will be bottled in March 2025

PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU CHALUMEAUX

This is a cooler terroir, with greater elevation, below Blagny, on the border of Puligny and Meursault. Flinty and reductive on the nose when tasted in October 2024. The palate is straight and driving, white fruited, chalky and clipped. This will be fabulous.

MEURSAULT 1ER CRU CHARMES

This comes from four sites, totalling just over one hectare. 80% is from the more mineral Charmes du Dessus and 20% from the broader Charmes du Dessous. A little shy on the nose when tasted in October 2024, this opened gradually on the palate to reveal an elegantly white fruited, tactile, tapering wine of length. It spends 12 months in old oak and then 4-5 months in tank.

MEURSAULT 1ER CRU PERRIÈRES

The domaine has a reasonable half a hectare here. Flinty and reductive on the nose in October 2024, leading into a palate of citrus rind and pear, delineated by an intense chalky limestone character. A wine of saltiness and terroir. I loved it.

RED WINES

BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR

The domaine’s Bourgogne Pinot Noir comes from three parcels, two of which are in Puligny-Montrachet and one in Meursault. This has five days of cold soak to bring out its pretty Pinot perfume. Fine raspberry perfume, with a palate of cool red cherry and crunchy acidity. Everything you want in a Bourgogne Rouge. 10% new oak.

AUXEY-DURESSES

The domaine’s Auxey comes from Les Heptures, close to Les Meix Chavaux, surrounded by the Meursault appellation. This is a cool, northwest facing site, half a hectare in size. Cool red berry fruit, with ripe, supple tannins and just-so acidity. 15-20% new oak.

MEURSAULT ROUGE

This has been one of our favourites for a few years now, a stand-out Pinot Noir from Meursault. Lush, pure and easy-going, with a little tea leaf spice. This is a juicy early drinker, which will give upfront pleasure, with chalky definition on the finish. 15-20% new oak.

MARANGES 1ER CRU LA FUSSIÈRE

The grapes for 1er Cru La Fussière are bought in (from AdèleMatrot’shusband’s Domaine Bachelet-Monnot). They are sourced from five hectares of vines. This is fresh and dark fruited, with more tannic bite and grip there is a muscularity here. As usual, these vines were harvested a week before those of the Marangesvillage, thanks to their natural ripeness. 15-20% new oak. 13.8% abv.

BLAGNY 1ER CRU LA PIÈCE SOUS LE BOIS

An emblematic Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir, made from a plot just above Sous le Dos d’Âne (from where Domaine Leflaive’s Meursault comes) and directly beneath the wood of Blagny hence sous le bois. Dark fruited, creamy aromas, leading into a palate of lovely pure Pinot fruit and leafy undergrowth, framed by fine tannins. A real over-performer this year. 100% destemmed. 20% new oak.
