Domaine Lafarge Vial

Domaine Lafarge Vial En Primeur 2019

Frédéric Lafarge and his wife Chantal established Domaine Lafarge Vial in 2014. They managed to secure several parcels of vines within Fleurie and one small adjoining parcel of Chiroubles, with buildings within the lieu-dit Bel-Air, in the commune of Fleurie.

All of the vineyards are trained in the traditional gobelet method and planted on degraded granite. The Lafarges have practised biodynamics from the outset, mirroring their approach in Volnay. The wines were bottled at the beginning of November.

Fleurie

FLEURIE

This is a blend of two parcels, Bel-Air and Cercillon, totalling 1.7 hectares. Bright red cherry and raspberry on the nose, leading into a supple, juicy, medium-bodied palate of wild strawberry. Vinified in 350 litre barrels and a large oak foudre, with 25% whole bunch vinification.

Corney & Barrow Score 16.5

Recommended drinking from 2022 – 2025

FLEURIE LA JOIE DU PALAIS

FLEURIE LA JOIE DU PALAIS

This very steep 1.2 hectare plot of 60 year old vines is trained in the historical gobelet method. Apparently the name alludes to the historical charm and elegance of its wines. Incense and exotic spices on the nose, with dark gravelly minerality. The palate has a notch more concentration than the Fleurie blend, finishing taut and with a zesty citrus definition. Aged in old oak.

Corney & Barrow Score 17+

Recommended drinking from 2022 – 2027

FLEURIE CLOS VERNAY

FLEURIE CLOS VERNAY (sold out)

A sloping 1.3 hectare south-east facing parcel, surrounded by meadow and woodland. The 40-50 year old vines are planted on granite and quartz, perhaps contributing to the mineral tension here. Ripe fruit aromas of bitter cherry and strawberry mingle with kirsch. The palate is succulent, wonderfully juicy, with bright, happy red berried flavours dancing across it. 25% whole bunch vinification.
