Wine Region

Tuscany, Italy

Vineyard

6.5 hectares

Giovanni Mazzei is something of a ‘Tour de Force’. He is the driver behind Ipsus, to such an extent that he lives in the middle of this glorious monopole. Quite literally embodying Ipsus. In the wine business, it is a real joy to be in on any project from the ‘off’. Having started as the agent for Hong Kong with the inaugural 2015 vintage, it is now great to offer this wine in the UK as well.

Back in May, I was very fortunate to taste several previous vintages. This 2022 is only the 7th vintage released (in eight years), and certainly, there is more than a touch of brilliance here. This year we are joined by another wine from the estate, in a different style: Nemora. We are offering the 2024 vintage.

Belief is so important in any project, and I share Giovanni’s here. Come along for the ride.

The growing seasons

IPSUS 2022

The 2022 growing season at Il Caggio was shaped by a mild winter and limited rainfall, setting the stage for a vintage defined by concentration, character and remarkable resilience. Spring arrived with balanced temperatures before gradually warming, encouraging a steady and even vegetative development across the vineyards.

Budbreak occurred during the first 10 days of April, with each parcel responding uniquely to the diverse soils and exposures that distinguish the estate. As the season progressed, warm temperatures and dry conditions accompanied flowering and fruit set, naturally regulating yields and producing smaller berries with thicker skins.

Careful canopy management and the pronounced day-to-night temperature shifts preserved freshness and aromatic precision, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly while maintaining their vibrancy and structure.

Harvest took place under excellent sanitary conditions, with perfectly healthy fruit arriving at the cellar.

Nemora 2024

The 2024 growing season began with a mild, rainy winter, followed by a balanced spring that also brought abundant rainfall, replenishing the soil's water reserves and providing the foundation for a harmonious vegetative cycle.

An early budbreak at the end of March was followed by flowering in mid-May, clearly indicating the vine's ability to adjust its biological rhythm to seasonal conditions and bringing the principal phenological stages back in line with the area’s historical averages.

During the summer, warm days and significant diurnal temperature variation, particularly from late August onward, encouraged a slow and gradual ripening process, preserving freshness while enhancing aromatic complexity and phenolic maturity.

Summer heat was naturally moderated by the altitude of Castellina in Chianti, the surrounding woodlands, and the unique microclimate that has long distinguished this historic corner of Chianti Classico.

Careful canopy management and rigorous selection in the vineyard allowed the vines to fully benefit from the soil's water reserves.

At harvest, the fruit displayed remarkable purity, vibrant aromatics, and exceptional balance, reflecting both the character of the vintage and the meticulous attention devoted to every individual parcel of the vineyard. The result is a refined and expressive 2024 vintage. The wines reveal freshness, elegance and harmony, showcasing the purity and sense of place that define the finest expressions of Sangiovese.

Harvest dates: 28th & 29th September. Rainfall Index (total rainfall between April 1st and September 30th): 481 mm. Temperature Index (sum of average daily temperatures from April 1st to September 30th): 3.765 °

THE WINES

We are delighted to be releasing IPSUS 2022 and the inaugural vintage of Nemora 2024.

IPSUS 2022

A fruited purity to this joyous nose, one to wallow in. This is a succulent but meditative wine, all fruited redness with a proper backbone. The tannins are there but more Milan than Saville row…

This will get better and better, but what a joy it is now. Moreish doesn’t do it justice.  Tasting, and more importantly drinking, this alongside the 2021 for years to come is going to be a joy.

NEMORA 2024

The first vintage of any wine is always quite a moment. I was so excited to taste this. Crunchy red fruits to the nose with a primal energy for sure. Open but with an earthiness lurking. Redcurrant and raspberries in abundance.

This will drink from the moment it arrives. I will get some delivered immediately and intend to have some real fun with it.

Bravo Giovanni.

THE VINEYARDS

Ipsus enjoys an enviable position, perched on the top of a hill at around 310 to 361 metres in altitude, with its six vineyard plots spread on either side of the estate, facing southeast and southwest. This not only maximises sunlight exposure, benefiting from both the rising and setting sun, but also ensures the vines are fully exposed to the wind, which helps protect the grapes from frost and disease pressure. The 6.5 hectares of vines planted have an average age of around 40 years, comprising seven Sangiovese clones developed over years of collaboration with the University of Florence. Four of these clones are unique to the Mazzei estates, having been identified through their massal selection programme. In the vineyard, alongside the use of cover crops and sustainable farming, the team choose not to prune the vines but instead keeps long shoots, wrapping them around the trellising. This technique, which is becoming increasingly common in Burgundy, is said to promote deeper root growth and reduce stress on the vines. The soils across the estate are a mix of clay schist, calcareous marls, and fragments of Alberese — Chianti’s most famous soil type. Giovanni describes the earth in the vineyard as very dense, forcing the vines to work hard to draw nutrients and water from below. The six individual plots — Cantina di Sopra, Cantina di Sotto, Pero, Campaccio di Sopra, Campaccio di Sotto, and Orto — are all well-draining yet distinct. Some contain coarser fragments of Alberese, while others feature a higher clay content and greater water availability.  The Campaccio plots (Giovanni’s favourites) and Orto produce a lighter, fresher juice, bringing vital balance to the final blend.

WINEMAKING

In the cellar, the team employs a combination of cutting-edge techniques with traditional Italian winemaking practices. On arrival, grapes from the six plots are divided into 16 separate micro-vinifications. Fermentation is spontaneous and lasts approximately 10 days without temperature control, followed by a 24-day maceration on the skins to enhance extraction of colour, flavour, and tannins. The wine is then aged for 24 months with 70% in new oak tonneaux and 20% in 15-hectolitre barrels. More recently, the team have begun experimenting with ceramic amphorae, with 10% of the 2021 vintage aged in a 13-hectolitre amphora. Throughout maturation, the 16 vinifications are kept separate. The barrels are sourced from seven different coopers in Burgundy and Austria, all of which use very light toasting or steaming methods. The goal is to avoid imparting excessive oak influence while softening the wine’s tannins and creating a range of components for the final blend. Constantly seeking improvement, the winemaking team have begun incorporating whole-bunch clusters in the fermentation from the 2024 vintage onwards.
