Vineyard

9 hectares

A passionate advocate for Umbrian wines and a leader in the revival of native grape varieties. Leonardo aspires to make quality wines with lesser-known grapes, driven by the belief that several varieties in his area deserve a better fate. In 2009 Bussoletti inherited seven hectares of agricultural land and decided to switch from wine sales to winegrower. With the assistance of his friend, expert agronomist Federico Curtaz, they looked for areas with the best conditions for growing quality Grechetto, Trebbiano and Ciliegiolo grapes. Enlisting help from the University of Milan, the duo searched for the best clones upon which Leonardo would base his business. Leonardo is also a founder of the Association of Ciliegiolo Producers of Narni, a group that aims to spread knowledge of the incredible properties of the Ciliegiolo grape. In 2022, 11 producers banded together to form this group. A man who loves food and wine, Leonardo takes inspiration from Burgundy to produce wines of stylistic elegance and Burgundian nuance.

The Vineyards

vineyards

The vineyards are located in the heart of Umbria, in the wildest and least known southern part. Encompassing nine hectares, the plots are located between Narni, San Gemini, Penna in Teverina and Alviano. For Leonardo, the secret of the quality of his wine lies in nature.

Grapes are grown in two different vineyards: a former breccia quarry in Narni called Brecciaro and a vineyard in San Gemini called Colle Ozio.

These sites are at 190 metres asl and 290 metres asl. respectively. The vines between 10 and 15 years old, trained by guyot, with a yiels between 600 and 800 per plant.
Grapes are harvested by hand and placed in 20-kg crates.

The soils are extremely varied: Ciliegiolo and Grechetto, cultivated at 290 meters above sea level, lie on clayey limestone stretches; Trebbiano, grown at an altitude of 200 meters, requires medium-structured soils. Leonardo workis according to ecological principles: he practices spontaneous fermentation and uses only natural yeast. Bussoletti is certified organic by the Italian body Suolo e Salute.
