Vineyard

70 years old Vineyards

It all started after 2010, in the aftermath of Chile’s catastrophic earthquake.

Like so many others, José Ignacio and Sebastian Maturana saw their family house and vineyards destroyed by the quake. As a result, they were forced to rebuild their business. Rather than continue to sell grapes to large brand-owners, they took the decision to focus on creating and selling wines of their own – premium wines with personality, that would reflect and honour the terroir of their homeland.

With this in mind, and to expand his winemaking experience, José Ignacio, former chief winemaker at renowned winery Casa Silva, travelled to Burgundy in 2011, to make wine during the Chilean winter. There, he immersed himself in the viticultural and winemaking techniques of the region, aiming to understand from within how small producers were working traditionally to make high-end wines.

Back in Chile, José Ignacio and Sebastian started to produce small-volume, distinctive wines that they hoped would display a sense of place, and that also represent a way of life. Together they created Maturana Wines.
