TASTING NOTES
BOURGOGNE ROUGE LA GOUZOTTE
This is a blend of two sites: Chaponnières, in Morey-Saint-Denis and Gravonnières, in Chambolle-Musigny. Attractive bright red cherry and raspberry fruit aromas, leading into a round, opulent palate lifted by pretty spices from 40% whole bunch fermentation. An early drinker of impressive depth.

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN VIEILLES VIGNES
The domaine’s village Gevrey-Chambertin is made from 1.51 hectares of vines, which are 45 years old on average. 60% of this comes from Les Justices, in the north, and 40% from Les Seuvrées, in the extreme south — the last parcel in Gevrey. This is the wine previously known as Justice des Seuvrées, now shortened to Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes for simplicity. A wine of pure, ripe, dark berry fruit, supported by fine, elegant tannins. Very expressive.

CHAPELLE-CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU
Chapelle-Chambertin, which takes its name from the old chapel of Nôtre-Dame de Bèze, lies below Clos de Bèze. This is made from two lieux-dits: Chapelle and Les Gémeaux (the twins), whose vines are 70 years old on average, planted on permeable limestone boulders. This often reaches maturity before Chambertin itself. Fine minerally perfume, still quite closed on the nose. The palate is crystalline and minutely detailed, the bright raspberry and cranberry flavours rising from the liquid, framed by fine, beautifully fruit-coated tannins. Tactile and intense.

CHARMES-CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU
This 0.80-hectare domaine-owned parcel of 50-year-old, particularly deep-rooted vines on rocky soils, lies at the highest point in the appellation, directly opposite the holding of Armand Rousseau. Fine rose petal perfume, with a red-berried fruit sweetness — strawberries and cream. The palate is joyous and tender, ebullient and soaring, with a powerful bedrock of minerally grit and fine but powerful, fruit-coated tannins. This is a highlight.

MAZOYÈRES-CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU
This comes from one hectare, owned by the domaine since 1994 and located on the high part of the slope, 200m from the Charmes. The vines are 55 years old on average. The soils are deeper — clay-limestone, mixed with chalky gravel. This is fleshier and more voluminous than the Charmes, the intense raspberry fruit lifted by orange zest and darker berry fruit. A fabulous Mazoyères of immense power which will need real patience.

CHAMBERTIN CLOS DE BÈZE GRAND CRU
The domaine has access to more vines in Clos de Bèze than in Chambertin. The average vine age here is over 50 years old. Aromas of piercing redcurrant or, as my tasting partner Aaran put it, “ripe, red-drenched compote fruit.” The palate is, contrastingly, inky-dark and virile, lifted by fresh acidity and with fine mineral richness beneath. Powerful and for the long term. Still gestating, even more so than Chambertin (below).

CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU VIEILLES VIGNES
Adjacent to Clos de Bèze on this majestic east-facing slope, Perrot-Minot’s Chambertin comes from vines of over 50 years of age. Initially tightly shut when tasted in November 2024 but with coaxing, aromas of roses and cranberry emerged, with a darker brooding bedrock beneath. The palate is intense, offering tactile dark berries, blueberries, and fine crushed rock minerality, framed by fine-grained, grippy tannins. Even with such power, this retains a remarkable lightness of touch and vivacity.

MOREY-SAINT-DENIS LA RUE DE VERGY
La Rue de Vergy, named after a noble Burgundy family, is a 1.5-hectare strip of 40-year-old vines located above Clos de Tart, high on the slope where the soils are thin and stony. Bitter cherry and dark forest fruit, with a flair of refined dark berry perfume. The dark minerally palate is bright and generous, with chalky bite and fine, powdery tannins. There is a winning fleshy generosity to the mid-palate.

MOREY-SAINT-DENIS 1ER CRU LA RIOTTE
La Riotte, a premier cru made by just two others, lies on the opposite side of the village from La Rue de Vergy. The name may be derived from Ruotte, a little road. This is a half-hectare holding of 55-year-old vines. A dark, toasty nose of coffee beans and fine dark minerally berries. The palate is intense and tactile, with minty freshness and profound minerality. Visceral but refined.

CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY VIEILLES VIGNES
The domaine’s only Chambolle village was previously called Orveaux des Bussières. Around half of it is from the upper slopes of Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d’Orveau; the lower section goes into Combe d’Orveau Cuvée Ultra. The remainder is from 100-year-old vines in Les Bussières. The total area is just 0.85 hectares. Aromas of bright red cherry fruit, rose petals and violets. The palate is sappy and fine on the entry, revealing a wine of crunchy momentum, freshness and luminosity, the filigree tannins exerting the merest grip on the finish.

CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY 1ER CRU LES FUÉES
This is from a mere 0.1282 hectares in Les Fuées, immediately south of Bonnes-Mares. It is so small that we don’t usually get to taste it — a rare treat in 2023. Tender raspberry aromas, with sappy spices, rose petals and fresh mint. So intricate! The palate is taffeta-like, with a beautiful seamless freshness and an aérien silkiness and finesse, lifted on a wave of blood orange zest.

CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY 1ER CRU LA COMBE D’ORVEAU VIEILLES VIGNES CUVÉE ULTRA
Nothing to do with signals intelligence, ‘ultra’ here denotes very old vines and is an additional stamp of quality. The 80-year-old vines are adjacent to Musigny Grand Cru. This lower part of the Combe d’Orveau has finer, siltier soils which confer greater density, according to Christophe. Supple and tender red fruit compote. This lets you inside the structure and then envelopes you in sensuous silky raspberry fruit and rose petal aroma, with tangerine rind lift and a fabulous tactile immediacy.

VOSNE-ROMANÉE VIEILLES VIGNES
The domaine’s Vosne-Romanée village bore the cuvée name Orme des Chalandins until the 2021 vintage, reflecting that it is a blend of Les Ormes and Les Chalandins, totalling around half a hectare of vines with an average age of 45 years. Crystalline aromas of raspberry and cranberry, with exotic spices. The palate is seamless and aromatic, filling the mouth with fine red berry and blueberry flavours. Mocha and a touch of fruit sweetness linger on the finish.

VOSNE-ROMANÉE CHAMPS PERDRIX
This lieu-dit bottling is made from a stony 0.4-hectare plot just above La Grande Rue Grand Cru. Christophe Perrot-Minot has described this as “elegant and diva-like”. Exotic spices and incense on the buoyant, aromatic nose. The palate is sappy and precise, linear and driving with, as Christophe says, “very good minerality”. The tannins are fine and perfume infused.

NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES 1ER CRU LA RICHEMONE VIGNES CENTENAIRES
CUVÉE ULTRA
The domaine has two hectares in La Richemone, by the Vosne-Romanée boundary. This cuvée retains the name ‘ultra’, in recognition of its very old vines, the survivors of which were planted in 1902 (the average vine age ranges from 65-80 years). It is “on the level of a grand cru”, as Christophe says. Dark and rose petal aromas, with a red-berried intensity building in the glass. Violets and velvet… The palate is cool and focussed, with building density and volume on the mid-palate, on which sweet, tender raspberry fruit is framed by filigree, fruit-coated tannins.
