The Aus den Lagen (‘from the sites’) Riesling is a blend of Erste and Grosse Lagen from across the estate. It comprises 10-20% of each of the family’s single-vineyard sites, with around 20% coming from Idig itself. Yellow peach and honeysuckle, tangy with orange zest, all lifted by fresh acidity. An upbeat wine of momentum and pep, with stony minerality lingering on the finish. 12% abv.

GIMMELDINGER KAPELLENBERG RIESLING 2024, ERSTE LAGE

Kapellenberg in Gimmeldingen lies on the southeast slope of a vineyard high in the foothills of the Haardt mountain range, with cooling breezes from the nearby forest. A chapel below the vineyard gives the site its name. A bright golden colour. Classic grapey Riesling aromas with white flowers and delicate yellow stone fruit, and a touch of peach skin. The palate is ripe and welcoming on the attack, tightening up on the nervy mineral mid-palate, which is lifted by bright, tensile acidity. One for the Chablis lovers. 12% abv.

RUPPERTSBERGER REITERPFAD RIESLING 2024, ERSTE LAGE

Reiterpfad is a large, gently sloping terrace. It was formed over thousands of years and consists of red sandstone boulders from the Haardt Mountains. This is a warmer site than Kapellenberg, as seen from the bright, more overtly fruity aromas of peach and yellow flowers. The palate is welcoming, offering delectable ripe yellow peach fruit and folded, integrated acidity. Tangy lemon rind persists on the long finish. 12% abv.

MEERSPINNE RIESLING GG 2024, GROSSE LAGE

One of the coolest GGs, planted on soils of loess, loam and a little limestone. The Christmanns have 1.1ha here. The coolest and the slimmest, according to Sophie. Meerspinne is a Grosse Lage sub-plot of Mandelgarten, dating back to 1456. Today, it is considered the best plot in Gimmeldingen. Shy on the nose in July 2025 — hints of tangerine rind. By contrast, the palate is nuanced and rich with yellow-hued apricot and peach fruit, orange zest and salty minerality on the finish. There is a tangible step up in concentration and volume here. This will be the most immediately approachable of the GGs in 2024. All from one big 2,500L barrel in 2024 that, in Sophie’s words, “just came together well.” 12% abv.

ÖLBERG-HART RIESLING GG 2024, GROSSE LAGE

Ölberg-Hart is a cool site and the furthest north of the GGs, right behind Idig — it sits inside an Erste Lage. Steffen and Sophie Christmann have 0.8ha here. Intensely mineral, chalky aromas. The palate is fresh with wet stone minerality on the attack, opening onto a nimble mid-palate of bright, nervy acids, dancing white peach and tangy lemon flavours. As usual, there is real power in reserve, suggesting a wine that will unfurl wonderfully over the next decade and more. The heavier terra fusca soils that develop on lime marl make this the most powerful of the Rieslings, according to Sophie. 12% abv.

VOGELSANG NEUSTADT RIESLING GG 2024, GROSSE LAGE

Its name meaning ‘birdsong’, this is described by Sophie as “the second pillar of our estate [with Idig]”. 3.5ha of hard limestone makes for a driving, linear style of Riesling. Located at the end of a deep, broad valley, it enjoys warm days and cool nights. Taut and acid-driven, this is a steely wine of chalky minerality and waxy lemon rind. Tactile and imbued with energy. As I think I wrote last year, give this time — I suspect it will be excellent with patience. “For us, it’s on the same level as Idig, but a very different expression”, said Steffen. 12% abv.

IDIG KÖNIGSBACH RIESLING GG 2024, GROSSE LAGE

This Grosse Lage is one of the most highly rated sites in Pfalz. The Christmann family owns the majority: 4ha of the total 6.5ha. Over half of their holding is planted to Riesling. Idig’s tertiary limestone soils result in higher pHs and a softer, more open-knit texture. A warming, inviting nose of crushed rock minerality and yellow peach. The palate is wonderfully pure and immediate, the insistently ripe nectarine and apricot fruit sustained by taut, mouth-watering acidity. Wet stone minerality and yellow flowers on the finish. 12% abv.

As for the Riesling, this is a blend of Erste and Grosse Lage sites from across the estate. This represents around 40% of the Pinot production. Dark berry aromas with Black Forest gateau and bitter cherry, and a touch of exotic spice. The palate is rich, with a certain pepperiness, resonant dark fruits and great purity. 8,000 bottles have been made. 13% abv.

This is an Erste Lage site, first made as a wine in its own right in 2019. It is between Kapellenberg and Idig. “Always the fruitiest and the most accessible when young”, according to Sophie. Blackberry and bright cranberry aromas. The palate is vibrant and juicy with lovely wild strawberry and raspberry fruit, framed by supple, fruit-infused tannins. Joyfully accessible. 13% abv.

MUSSBACHER ESELSHAUT SPÄTBURGUNDER 2022, ERSTE LAGE

This was a new wine in the 2021 vintage. It comes from a south-facing site of red sandstone soils at 165-178m elevation, with a 10% gradient. A discreet, darkly berried nose, with violet, dark chocolate and a touch of liquorice. The palate is impressively concentrated, showing real finesse and fine-boned structure. This makes a nice pair with the previous wine — its darker-berried twin. 13% abv.

KÖNIGSBACHER ÖLBERG SPÄTBURGUNDER 2022, ERSTE LAGE

Ölberg is a high, sloping Erste Lage in Königsbach, one of the best sites in Pfalz. It enjoys morning sun and late afternoon shade. As at Idig, the soils are limestone marl and the brown clay and loam known as terra fusca. Spicy, exotic aromas — the whole-bunch treatment is most visible here. The palate is cool and focussed on the attack, red-berried and playful, with an almost Vosne-like elegance and nervy, chalky tension beneath. Fabulous wine of terroir and aroma. 13% abv.

GIMMELDINGER BIENGARTEN SPÄTBURGUNDER 2022, ERSTE LAGE

This Erste Lage consists of steep terraces in the Haardt hills between Gimmeldingen and Königsbach. There are 0.3ha of old vines, planted in 1982, with a younger 0.7ha plot. The site is protected from cold winds by a small hollow in the hillside. “Our Clos Saint-Jacques — my hidden favourite”, according to Sophie. The nose here could certainly make you believe you are somewhere grand in the Côte de Nuits. The palate is powerful, the red and black berry fruit framed by fine, chalky tannins, with exotic, peppery spices lifting the flavours. Nicely pitched acidity. My favourite too… 13% abv.

VOGELSANG NEUSTADT SPÄTBURGUNDER GG 2022, GROSSE LAGE

A south-southeast-facing plot, at 160-280masl, with a 25% gradient slope. Located at the end of a deep, broad valley, this is a place of warm days and cool nights. Limestone soils “with shells”. The estate had made a Riesling here for years (see Riesling notes). In 2019, they planted some Pinot Noir from massal selections from the Côte d’Or. 2021 was so good, they decided to release it as the first Pinot Noir vintage from the site. Restrained on the nose, opening onto a palate of nervy, citric tension and fine red berries, with a certain tangerine rind flair and dried herbs. This will be fabulous. 13% abv.

IDIG SPÄTBURGUNDER GG 2022, GROSSE LAGE

The Grosse Lage Idig vineyard is one of the most highly rated sites in the Palatine region, making this the flagship holding of the estate. The Christmann family owns the majority: 4ha of the total 6.5ha. Records of Idig date back to the 14th century, when it formed part of an aristocratic estate. 75% of Idig was planted in 1975 and 25% in 2008. A dark-berried nose, saturated with intense, pure-fruited aromas, leads into a powerful palate of blackberries, bitter cherries and dark chocolate. Inky-black and beautifully pure, with a touch of fruit sweetness to the finish. A delight to taste young, and it will no doubt age beautifully. 13% abv.
