Côte de Beaune, Burgundy
Vineyard
8 hectares
Sat within the acclaimed village of Volnay, in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune, this family-owned domaine encompasses eight hectares of vines spread over Volnay, Pommard and Chambolle-Musigny. Using lutte raisonée viticultural practices, which involve ploughing and avoiding pesticides or herbicides in the vineyards, the siblings pay homage to traditional methods whilst carefully preserving sustainability.
Tracing its roots to the 17th century, the domaine first began with Pierre Glantenay who later entrusted it to his son, Georges. Each generation passes on both their vines and their savoire-faire to the next – the Chambolle holdings were passed down from Sarah and Guillaume’s grandmother, for example.
Representing the fourth generation, Sarah and Guillaume have recently acquired 0.2ha in Pommard Les Cras, which now goes into the Pommard village. Vines that will no doubt also become part of the future generation’s assets.

TASTING NOTES
MONTHÉLIE 1ER CRU LES CHAMPS FULLIOT
Sarah and Guillaume’s parents bought this 0.4 hectare plot in 2008. It is located just above Meursault and Volnay’s Les Santenots that border land where Pinot and Chardonnay meet. After replanting it to Chardonnay, the first proper vintage was 2015. Salty-mineral, with a strict chalky seam running through the plush white peach fruit. Fermented and aged in and 500L new oak barrel. 1,850 bottles were made.

VOLNAY
This is made from eight different plots in the village of Volnay, totalling two hectares with the Vieilles Vignes cuvée (the next wine). These vines range from 5 to 60 years of age. Fleshy raspberry fruit, with bright acidity and peppery spices, framed by fine chalky tannins. This sees 20% new oak.

VOLNAY VIEILLES VIGNES
This is a selection of the oldest vines, ranging from 60 to 92 years old, from four plots of the domaine’s two hectares of village Volnay. More concentrated, thanks to the smaller berries coming from these sites. There is a bright phenolic crunch to the vibrant raspberry fruit, with a darker aspect than the regular Volnay. The tannins remain elegant and polished. 20% oak.

VOLNAY 1ER CRU LE RONCERET
This is a stony 0.4 hectare of 65 year-old vines in the centre of the village, just below Champans. Half of the vines have just come back into production and so are five years old. The first vintage was 2017. The name is thought to come from ronce, meaning blackberry. Ronceret is perhaps the most accessible of the premiers crus and tends to be the first vineyard picked, thanks in part to the reflected heat from the stones in the vineyard. A floral, delicate style, with intense dark fruit and lifted, playful acidity. 30% new oak was used. 2,639 bottles were produced.

VOLNAY 1ER CRU LA ROBARDELLE
Adjacent to Santenots, domaine’s 0.35 hectare holding in La Robardelle is planted north-south, meaning the vines get sun exposure all day long. This is the second vintage of this wine, which Sarah and Guillaume have recently recovered from a long-term lease. Robardelle has deeper clay soils, contributing to what Sarah describes as this wine’s ‘unctuous’ character. Dark and generous, with fresh acidity and a focused finish. 30% new oak.

VOLNAY 1ER CRU LES BROUILLARDS
The evocatively named Brouillards fogs in French – is actually named after its first owner. At 1.10 hectares, it is the domaine’s largest premier cru wine. The vines here are 60 years old. It is on the Pommard side of the village, to the north of Mitans and over the road from Les Angles. There are more stones in the limestone-rich soil here. Bright, peppery dark berry and cherry fruit, with tensile focus and chalky minerality, working in tandem with the clipped tannins. Again, this has an excellent fresh juiciness. 30% new oak.

POMMARD
This comes from four plots within the village of Pommard including Les Riottes, which is over 90 years old and the 25-year-old Les Cras, the newest addition. Juicy red cherry and blackcurrant fruit, with supple tannins and a long, focused finish. An upbeat, elegant Pommard vinified with 20% new oak.

POMMARD 1ER CRU LES COMBES DESSUS
The premier cru Combes Dessus is on the border of Pommard and Volnay. The domaine has 0.3 hectares here. This was one of the first cuvées reintroduced to the domaine in 2015 by Sarah and Guillaume. A dark, toasty nose, leading into a sweetly, darkly-fruited palate of bright cherry and blackberry. This is fermented using vinification integrale, or whole-berry fermentation, which preserves bright fruit flavours and freshness. Fermented at 25°C, making for a longer, gentler fermentation. 30% was aged in new oak barrels.

POMMARD 1ER CRU LES RUGIENS HAUTS
A steeply-sloping 0.35 hectare plot, on the Volnay side of the village. Along with Épenots, Rugiens ranks among the best terroirs of Pommard some feel it is worthy of grand cru status. The name Rugiens derives from ‘ferruginous’, reflecting its red, iron-rich soil. This is fermented using vinification intégrale, whereby whole (destemmed) berries are fermented in large 500L oak barrels. The irony character is evident in this wine’s texture and bite, which balances really well against the bright fruit-focused palate. Around 50% new oak was used.

CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY
We now move to the Côte de Nuits and Chambolle-Musigny. The holdings here come from Sarah’s paternal grandmother. This village cuvée comes from three sites dotted throughout the village, giving an overview of Chambolle. Roses and pretty red berries, very fine and with excellent density and balance. Fine, gently grippy tannins. 20% new oak.

CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY 1ER CRULES FEUSSELOTTES
Les Feusselottes sits in the middle of the appellation, just above Les Charmes. The first vintage made from the domaine’s tiny 0.08 hectare plot here was 2017. This is another wine made using vinification intégrale (whole berry fermentation in barrel). A floral nose of peonies, violets and dried roses. The palate has a dark core of elegant berry fruit, with bright raspberry, peppery spices and bitter chocolate, all framed by chalky, fine tannins. Just 556 bottles were made.
