Vineyard
10 hectares
Father and daughter team Pierre and Anne Morey take the domaine into its second half-century in fine form. They have been joined from the 2020 vintage by the third generation, Anne’s son, Jean-Victor Morey. Our relationship with Pierre Morey dates back to his 20-year tenure as Régisseur of Domaine Leflaive, from 1988 to 2008. The ‘Morey era’ includes some legendary Leflaive vintages. Pierre combined his position in Puligny-Montrachet with running the family estate in Meursault. It is no coincidence that certain milestones were reached concurrently at both domaines, such as turning biodynamic in 1997. Domaine Pierre Morey’s ten hectares span the villages of Monthélie, Pommard, Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault, where the domaine is based. In addition, the family has access to some choice parcels, which are vinified identically at the domaine and bottled under the négociant label, Maison Morey-Blanc, established in 1992. Around half of the production here is Chardonnay, with the remainder being Aligoté and Pinot Noir. Corney & Barrow is the exclusive UK and Singapore agent.

BOURGOGNE ALIGOTÉ
DOMAINE MOREY
This old vine Aligoté is from a 1.86-hectare plot of vines in Meursault, planted in 1969 and owned by the domaine. Bottled just before the 2024 harvest, at the end of August. Green apple skin aromas, this is bright and electric on the nose. The palate is taut and steely, quite stark on the entry, before finding some breadth on the mid-palate. Vinified in tank, as there were no barrels to spare in the large 2023 vintage.

BOURGOGNE CÔTE D’OR CHARDONNAY DOMAINE MOREY
The domaine’s Bourgogne Blanc comes from 1.76 hectares in Meursault, on deep clay and chalk soils. The majority of these vines were planted in 1984. This wine is always a favourite, far surpassing its regional status whilst offering a window into the estate’s signature style. “Really the little brother of Meursault”, as Anne put it. An open nose of white flowers and peach fruit, very pure. The palate is crunchy on the entry, opening onto a mid-palate of fleshier white peach. This is a massive over-performer.

MEURSAULT CLOS LE MEIX TAVAUX DOMAINE MOREY
This is a 0.29-hectare parcel, planted in 1985. The domaine’s first vintage was 2019. Le Meix Tavaux is a gently sloping site (“almost no slope”) in the heart of the village, with rocky, well-drained soils which dry very quickly. A chalky white flower nose, leading into a fine-boned palate of white peach, pear skin and granular salty minerality, which persists on the long finish. A good wine for “when you need happiness,” as Anne rather beautifully put it.

MEURSAULT LES TERRES BLANCHES DOMAINE MOREY
This lieu-dit lies just below premier cru Les Gouttes d'Or and beside Domaine Jacques Prieur’s Clos de Mazeray. Its name reflects the shallowness and chalkiness of the soil (although the soil itself is brown, not white, Anne says). This is a 0.4-hectare plot, planted in 1989. The domaine’s first vintage was 2006. Half has been replanted and is out of production from this vintage. A fine chalky nose, of white flower and white pepper. The palate is salty mineral from the attack through to the textured, granular mid-palate. Crunchy and phenolic on the finish.

MEURSAULT LES TESSONS DOMAINE MOREY
This stony, 0.89-hectare mid-slope plot was planted in 1978. It lies above the village of Meursault and below Auxey-Duresses. Positioned at the same altitude as the premier crus, Tessons tends to produce wines of shape and terroir. A meagre 30cm of soil, with rock beneath brings out this wine’s mineral tension and longevity. More yellow flower perfume here. The palate is open-weave and textural, with notes of yellow peach, honeysuckle and honeycomb. We tasted this in October 2024 before, in Anne’s opinion, it closes when the cellar cools down in the winter.

MEURSAULT 1ER CRU LES PERRIÉRES DOMAINE MOREY
This stony, sunny 0.52-hectare plot, located within the lieu-dit Perrières Dessous, lies close to the village’s southern border, on the Puligny boundary. Lots of active limestone here. Half of the holding was planted in 1976. It is a small clos (walled vineyard) that benefits from reflected heat from the warm, chalky soils. Perrières is an icon of the domaine, producing concentrated wines of substance. A third was replanted in 2012. This is a wine of white peach fruit, wet stone minerality and dry extract. I’m not sure there is a better example of a ‘mineral’ wine out there…

PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU CHAMP GAIN DOMAINE MOREY
Made since 2017, the domaine’s Champ Gain comes from just 0.17 hectares of this stony high-slope premier cru, planted with 40+year-old vines. Yellow peach and apricot aromas, leading into a palate of stunning electric verve. Extract and focussed salty minerality on the poised finish. This is so exuberant in youth, I would be tempted to try a bottle on the earlier side.

BÂTARD-MONTRACHET GRAND CRU DOMAINE MOREY
The domaine has a 0.49-hectare holding in Bâtard-Montrachet’s renowned Clos Poirier, beside Le Montrachet. The oldest vines date from 1965, whilst the majority were planted in 1992. The rich, well-drained clay soils here are relatively shallow. This tends to be a complex, full-bodied wine which mirrors the richness of its terroir. The family produces this domaine bottling and, since 2011, a second Bâtard-Montrachet from the neighbouring plot, bottled under the Morey-Blanc label. Shy on the nose when tasted in October 2024. The palate is textural rather than flavour some at present — very slowly, a compressed lime zest line appears, with sherbet and a taut, linear, driving shape.

MONTHELIE DOMAINE MOREY
The domaine’s Monthélie comes from six lieux-dits in the heart of the appellation, surrounding the village. The family owns 1.32 hectares of old vines here, planted on average in 1965 and certified organic. Intense red berry aromas, with a nice crunch to the palate. This will be bottled in early spring 2025.

ALOXE-CORTON 1ER CRU LES VERCOTS MOREY-BLANC
Les Vercots lies between the Route Nationale and the ‘vineyard road’ to Pernand-Vergelesses, south of the hill of Corton. Tasted in October 2024, before the malolactics had finished. Dark violet fruit and firm, structured tannins. Powerful — or as Anne said, “Côte de Nuits style.”

VOLNAY 1ER CRU PITURES MOREY-BLANC
Made here since 2018, Pitures is a mid-slope vineyard which borders Pommard and Marquis d’Angerville’s Clos des Ducs. Domaine Lafarge also has a holding here. The earliest record of this lieu-dit is in the 13th century. The name probably derived from ‘pasture’. We tasted a blend of two barrels in October 2024. An impressively built wine, whose pretty raspberry fruit is framed by fine, firm tannins.

VOLNAY 1ER CRU SANTENOTS MOREY-BLANC
This is from a 0.35-hectare parcel, located in the lieu-dit Les Pétures and planted in 1974. It is in that overlapping borderland where whites are Meursault and reds are Volnay. Located at mid-slope, with shallow, friable red soils. From 1999 to 2003, this was produced under the Morey-Blanc label. Acquired in 2003, it has bornethe domaine’s label since 2004, the first biodynamic vintage. Lovely exotic spices on the nose, with pure raspberry fruit. The palate is kaleidoscopically pretty, offering violet, peony and crystalline cranberry flavours. The tannins are fine and lacy.

POMMARD 1ER CRU GRANDS ÉPENOTS DOMAINE MOREY
The most delicate and refined of Pommards, which Anne Morey describes as “a beautiful vineyard”. The domaine has 0.43 hectares, at mid-slope, planted in 1965. The limestone is close to the surface, with red top soil. Since 2012 there has been a petition for Grands Épenots to be upgraded to grand cru (Corton is currently the only red grand cru in the Côte de Beaune). Dark, inky aromas of bitter cherry, plum and liquorice. Black forest gâteau... The palate is shiny and inviting, with fine, powerful tannins framing the silky blackberry fruit.
